The College of Arts and Sciences is dedicated to providing of programs
that prepare students for a variety of professional roles through enhancement
of their abilities to communicate and to understand and appreciate the
world through a broad-based, liberal arts education.
Intended Educational (Student) Outcomes:
1. Students completing the Latin American Studies program will
have competency in the Spanish language.
2. Graduates of the program will have a broad, integrated knowledge
of Latin American culture, economics, geography, history, and politics.
3. Graduates will be prepared in their chosen area of concentration
for entry into careers relating to Latin America.

1. Students completing the Latin American Studies program will
have competency in the Spanish language.
First Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
1a. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Graduating seniors will take a standardized examination that assesses
competency in reading and writing Spanish. The average scores on the
examination will be at least 70%.
1a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
There are no data at this point in time. This is a new program that
had no graduates in Fall 2003.
1a. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
When students graduate from the program, the Latin American Studies
faculty will assess their reading and writing competencies in Spanish.
Second Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
1b. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Graduating seniors will be given an oral examination by Spanish faculty
to assess fluency in spoken Spanish. The average score on this examination
will be at least 70%.

that measures knowledge of Latin American culture, geography, history,
and politics. The average score on this examination will be 70%.

2a. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
When students graduate from the program, the Latin American Studies
faculty will assess their knowledge of the Latin American Studies curriculum.

2b. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Examination subscales include: culture, geography, history, and
politics will be assessed to identify areas of strength and weakness.
The average score on each of the subscales will be at least 70%.

2b. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
When students graduate from the program, the Latin American Studies
faculty will assess their knowledge of the Latin American Studies curriculum;
in particular, they will analyze success on the subscales for the locally-developed
examination.

for entry into careers relating to Latin America.
First Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
3a. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Graduates will be surveyed one year after graduation to gather information
on the number who have entered careers relating to Latin America. The
number of those with Latin American related careers will be at least 50%

3a. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
When students graduate from the program, the Latin American Studies
faculty will survey student success at obtaining employment in fields
related to Latin American studies .
Second Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
3b. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Graduating seniors will be surveyed to gather supporting data concerning
whether they believe the program has prepared them for careers relating
to Latin America. The responses will be measured on a Likert scale ranging
from 1 (not well at all) to 5 (very well). At least 80% of graduates
will respond 5 or 4 on the scale.
3b. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
There are no data at this point in time. This is a new program that
had no graduates in Fall 2003.
3b. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
When students graduate from the program, the Latin American Studies
faculty will assess student satisfaction at their preparation by the program.
