Texas A&M International University, a Member of the Texas A&M University System, is committed to the preparation of students for leadership roles in their chosen profession and in an increasingly complex, culturally diverse state, national, and global society… Through instruction, faculty and student research, and public service, Texas A&M International University is a strategic point of delivery for well-defined programs and services that improve the quality of life for citizens of the border region, the State of Texas, and national and international communities.

Administrative or Educational Support Unit Mission Statement:
TRIO’s Student Support Services offers support services to program participants who are economically disadvantaged, first generation college students and students with disabilities.  Program participants receive tutoring and supplemental instruction in academic areas, career, personal and academic counseling, and the opportunity to attend cultural activities outside the university.

Intended Administrative Objectives:
1. Program participants will persist toward completion of an academic program (retention).

2. Program participants will be in good academic standing, which means that they will have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 at the institution.

3. Program participants classified as seniors will graduate on or before their sixth year.

Intended Administrative or Educational Support Objective:

1.  Program participants will persist toward completion of an academic program (retention).

First Means of Assessment for Objective Identified Above:
1a. Means of Unit Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Annual FOCUS reports, part of the university’s system database used for reporting, will indicate that no less than seventy-two percent (115 students) will continue to be enrolled at the university.  “Overall retention” will not fall below 72%.  The 72% is the baseline from 2001-2002.  The FOCUS report will be run on the 12th class day of Fall 2003.

1a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
Results indicate that 82.14% of students classified as first-time freshmen and 73.07% of transfer and other students (those who are classified as sophomores, juniors, and seniors) were retained.  Overall retention from Fall 2001-2002 was 72% and for Fall 2002-2003 was 74.68%.

1a. Use of Results to Improve Unit Services:
The TRIO Program implemented a mentoring program using available resources from within the university and community.

Intended Administrative or Educational Support Objective:

2.  Program participants will be in good academic standing which means that they will have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 at the institution.

First Means of Assessment for Objective Identified Above:
2a. Means of Unit Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Annual FOCUS reports, part of the university’s system database used for reporting, will indicate that at least 82% (128 students) will meet academic performance levels required to stay in good academic standing at the institution.  The 82% is the baseline form 2001-2002.  The FOCUS report will be run on the 12th class day of Fall 2003.

2a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
The baseline for Fall 2001-2002 was 82%.  The results for Fall 2002-2003 indicate that 90.8% of participants were in good academic standing.

2a. Use of Results to Improve Unit Services:
Program staff and tutors will personally contact program students to promote and encourage students to attend tutoring sessions.

3a. Means of Unit Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Annual FOCUS reports, part of the university’s system database used for reporting, will indicate that at least 45% of participants classified as seniors will graduate on or before their sixth year.  The 45% is the baseline from 2001-2002.  The FOCUS report will be run on the 12th class day of Fall 2003.

3a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
The baseline for Fall 2001-2002 was 45%.  Results from Fall 2002-2003 indicate that 63.63% of participants classified as seniors graduated on or before their sixth year.

3a. Use of Results to Improve Unit Services:
Program staff encouraged students classified as seniors to attend classes on a full-time basis.
