Administrative or Educational Support Unit Mission Statement:
The Texas A&M International University Intercollegiate Athletics program exists for the sake of the students at A&M international- for their growth and development.  Intercollegiate athletics, operating under the principles of fair play and amateurism, provide equal opportunity for talented students to participate in a nationally competitive sports program that is values-based and educationally sound.

Intended Administrative or Educational Support Unit Objectives:

1. Every student–athlete who completes his/her eligibility is expected to graduate.

2. Each sport should aspire to be competitive at the national level.

3. An efficient and cost-effective support system for the operation of the existing athletic program should be developed and maintain.

Intended Administrative or Educational Support Unit Objective:
1.  Every Student- Athlete who completes his/her eligibility is expected to graduate.

First Means of Assessment for Objective Identified Above:
1a. Means of Unit Assessment & Criteria for Success:
90% of all students-athletes that complete his/her eligibility will graduate with baccalaureate degree.

1a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
The athletics program is in an early developmental stage.  Of the five student-athletes who completed their eligibility in 2003, three have already graduated with their baccalaureate degree.  The other two are scheduled to graduate in December 2004.  The combined GPA of all student-athletes was 2.718.

1a. Use of Results to Improve Unit Services:
Continue monitoring academic progress of student-athletes.  Encourage or mandate student-athletes study halls or attendance in tutoring programs.

Second Means of Assessment for Objective Identified Above:
1b. Means of Unit Assessment & Criteria for Success:
After completion of the second semester of attendance and from then on, a student must have accumulated a minimum of 24 institutional credit hours in the two immediately previous terms of attendance.

1b. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
At the time of eligibility processing, student-athletes not meeting this criteria were removed from the roster of that team until they meet this criteria.

1b. Use of Results to Improve Unit Services:
Continue monitoring academic progress of student-athletes.  Encourage or mandate student-athletes study halls or attendance in tutoring programs.

Third Means of Assessment for Objective Identified Above:
1c. Means of Unit Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Upon reaching junior academic standing as defined by the institution, 90% of student-athletes will have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.000 on a 4.000 scale.

1c. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
At the time of eligibility processing student-athletes not meeting this criteria are removed from the roster of that team and are not allowed to compete intercollegiately.

1c. Use of Results to Improve Unit Services:
Continue monitoring academic progress of student-athletes.  Encourage or mandate student-athletes study halls or attendance in tutoring programs.

2.  Each sport should aspire to be competitive at the national level.


First Means of Assessment for Objective Identified Above:
2a. Means of Unit Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Each Team sport will achieve at least as many wins as loses in their overall season record.

2a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
In this assessment period two of TAMIU’S five sports achieved winning overall records.
(Better than .500 winning percentage)

2a. Use of Results to Improve Unit Services:
More attention must be given to recruiting, retention, and program development of the team sport that did not achieve a .500 winning percentage.

Second Means of Assessment for Objective Identified Above:
2b. Means of Unit Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Each sport will be represented in “postseason” play.
(i.e.: conference, regional or national competition)

2b. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
Three of five team sports participate in conference postseason play.  Two of those three teams advanced to NAIA Region VI competition.  In the individual sports, a cross-country athlete became the first TAMIU student-athlete to participate in a NAIA National Championship event.

2b. Use of Results to Improve Unit Services:
This means of unit assessment and criteria for success will be carried over the upcoming academic year.

3.  An efficient and cost-effective support system for the operation of the existing athletic program should be development and maintained.

First Means of Assessment for Objective Identified Above:
3a. Means of Unit Assessment & Criteria for Success:
50% to 60% of the athletic operating budget will be met by locally generated fees.

3a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
Fees are now being discussed at the Executive Level to supplement funding for Athletic and Recreational programs.

3a. Use of Results to Improve Unit Services:
This dynamic factor will need to be monitored so that program development will not exceed student population growth.

Second Means of Assessment for Objective Identified Above:
3b. Means of Unit Assessment & Criteria for Success:
A support system for athletic scholarships will be established to fund 50% of the maximum scholarships allowed by the NAIA.

3b. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
Fundraising events were conducted to generate scholarships revenues.  These events generated approximately $ 18,000.00.  The Dust Devil Alliance, an athletic advertising package, generated approximately $37,000.00

3b. Use of Results to Improve Unit Services:
Significant effort must be made to increase the funding available for athletic scholarships in order for TAMU to be competitive at our level.
