The College of Arts and Humanities is dedicated to the provision of programs that prepare students for a variety of professional rates through enhancement of their abilities to communicate and to understand and appreciate the world through a broad-based, liberal arts education.

Intended Educational (Student) Outcomes:
1. Students completing the Latin American Studies program will have competency in the Spanish language.

2. Graduates of the program will have a broad, integrated knowledge of Latin American culture, geography, history, and politics.

3. Graduates will be prepared in their chosen area of concentration for entry into careers relating to Latin America.

Intended Educational (Student) Outcome:

1. Students completing the Latin American Studies program will have competency in the Spanish language.

First Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
1a. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Graduating Latin American Studies seniors will take a standardized examination that assesses competency in reading and writing Spanish.  The average scores on the examination will be at least 70%.

1a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
There is no data at this point in time.  This is a new program that had no graduates in Spring 2003.

1a. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:

Second Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
1b. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Graduating seniors will be given an oral examination by Spanish faculty to assess fluency in spoken Spanish.  The average score on this examination will be at least 70%.

1b. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
No data.  This is a new program with no graduates in Spring 2003.

Graduating seniors will take a locally-generated, comprehensive examination that measures knowledge of Latin American culture, geography, history, and politics.  The average score on this examination will be at least 70%.

Examination subscales include:  culture, geography, history and politics will be assessed to identify areas of strength and weakness.  The average score on each of the subscales will be at least 70%.

3. Graduates will be prepared in their chosen area of concentration for entry into careers relating to Latin America.

First Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
3a. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Graduates will be surveyed one year after graduation to gather information on the number who have entered careers relating to Latin America.  The number of those with Latin American related careers will be at least 50%.

There are no data at this point in time.  This is a new program with no graduates in Spring 2003.

Second Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
3b. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Graduating seniors will be surveyed to gather supporting data concerning whether they believe the program has prepared them for careers relating to Latin America.  The responses will be measured on a Likert scale ranging from 1 (not well at all) to 5 (very well).  At least 80% of graduates will respond 5 or 4 on the scale.
