College/University Goal(s) Supported:
The mission of the Bachelor of Social Work Program is to prepare
students as beginning level generalist professional social work practitioners
who are committed to promoting the well being of all people. Besides
emphasizing beginning level social work knowledge and sills, in keeping
with the mission, the effects of injustice and oppression for people
living along the border of Texas and Mexico are emphasized throughout
the curriculum.
Intended Educational (Student) Outcomes:
1. At the end of the program, Social work students will understand
and be able to apply the values of the profession and exhibit an understanding
of the impact of issues of diversity, economic injustice and oppression
on families, communities and groups in their internship and future job.
2. Social work graduates will compare favorably with other social
work graduates in the state and nation in knowledge and beginning level
social work generalist skills.
3. Graduates will acquire social work employment in a social
work setting where they will satisfactorily apply their beginning level
social work generalist practice skills and/or be admitted to graduate
school.

Intended Educational (Student) Outcome:

1. At the end of the program, Social work students will understand
and be able to apply the values of the profession and exhibit an understanding

First Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
1a. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
The percent of students who graduate in December of 2002 and May
2003 and pass the state licensure exam will be used to assess satisfactory
performance on this exam. Content areas in which students are examined
include: practice, communication and relationships, utilization of
practice research, human development and behavior, professional values,
ethics and policies governing service, policies and procedures governing
service delivery, effects of culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation,
gender, age, and disability, and supervision, administration and service
delivery.
1a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
Of the five students who graduated in December 2002, three took
and have successfully passed the state licensure exam. The fourth person
is preparing to take the exam. The fifth person was admitted to the
Master of Social Work Program at the University of Texas. The students
in the May 2003 cohort are preparing to take the licensure exam.
1a. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
This exam is broken down into several categories related to knowledge
and practice skills. This information will be used to improve the content
of courses where students are having problems.

Internship evaluations including self evaluation, supervisor evaluation,
and liaison evaluation.

First Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
2a. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
ACAT assessment which covers nine skill areas: diversity, populations
at risk, social and economic justice, values and ethics, policy &
services, social work Practice, HBSE, and Research methods. It is a
national exam and 68% of the scores fall between 400 and 600. Two cohorts
– five in each have taken the ACAT.
2a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
Cohort 1 = 5 students: One student scored above the expected range,
three scored within the 400 to 600 range and one scored below this range
(1/31/03).
Cohort 2 = 5 students: Four students scored within the 400 to 600 range
and one scored above.
2a. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
In the first cohort the areas in which students scored the lowest
was in social work practice and research methods. The second cohort
scored the lowest in the areas of social and economic justice and populations
at-risk. After the first exam, appropriate measures were taken to make
improvements in the practice and research courses. The results of the
second cohort demonstrate that course improvements were successful.
The curriculum is being examined to determine how best to deliver the
content in which the second cohort of students fell short.

3. Graduates will acquire social work employment in a social
work setting where they will satisfactorily apply their beginning level
social work generalist practice skills and/or be admitted to graduate
school.

3a. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
A survey will be conducted with students graduating in December
2002 and May 2003 to determine the number employed in social work jobs
within three months of graduation.
3a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
Preliminary phone survey and formal Employment Survey to be administered
in 2005. Results of the 10 BSW graduates:
*One has been admitted to The University of Texas at Austin
*Seven have been employed in Social Work settings
*One is doing an internship in Nevada
*One is currently interviewing for a social work position
3a. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
This data will be used to assess the extent to which social work
course content, exercises, and contextual learning contribute toward
job readiness and acquisition.

Employers will be sent a survey to rate the acquisition of social
work competencies mastered in the program by students hired in the agency
in 2005.
