To increase “(1) students’ ability to communicate through the use
of the written and spoken word; (2) their knowledge and appreciation
of culture, fine arts, social integration; and (3) self realization.
The College [COAH] also prepares students for a variety of professions
and roles by providing a broad-based liberal arts education.”
Intended Educational (Student) Outcomes:
1. MA graduates will have a comprehensive knowledge of the
language, literature and culture of Spain and Spanish America.
2. Graduates will have written or presented publishable papers
which demonstrate their familiarity with literary theory and criticism,
and their command of research skills.
3. Students completing the MA degree who desire to pursue doctoral
studies in Spanish
will be successful in gaining admission to Ph.D. programs in Spanish.

1. MA graduates will have a comprehensive knowledge of the language,
literature and culture of Spain and Spanish America.
First Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
1a. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
At the close of the program, at least 90% of the student will pass
the comprehensive exams, as judge by the departmental faculty grading
this required activity.

As of spring 2003, there were no grades in the Spanish MA Program;
thus we were unable to assess this outcome.

At least 70% of the graduates, by their graduation date, will have
presented papers, or participated in panel discussions at a local or
regional conference or colloquium.

thus we were unable to assess this outcome.

3. Students completing the MA degree who desire to pursue doctoral
studies in Spanish
will be successful in gaining admission to Ph.D. programs in Spanish.
First Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
3a. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
At least 80% of graduates who seek admission to Ph.D. programs in
Spanish will be accepted. A yearly follow-up study will be used to
gather data.
3a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
As of spring 2003, there were no graduates in the Spanish MA Program;
thus we were unable to assess this outcome.

3b. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
At least 80% of the students will earn a grade of “A” in all oral
or written activities associated with the relevant courses. While grades
of “C” are discouraged, a maximum of 2 will be accepted toward the degree.
