Graduates of the Canseco School of Nursing will be prepared to enter the work force as Registered Nurses.

Intended Educational (Student) Outcomes:
1. Graduates of the basic Bachelor of Science in Nursing program of the Canseco School of Nursing will be successful on the NCLEX-RN licensure examination.

2. Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program of the Canseco School of Nursing will be employed as Registered Nurses in Laredo and the surrounding Mid Rio Grande region.

3. Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program of the Canseco School of Nursing will demonstrate mastery of clinical competencies.

1.  Graduates of the basic Bachelor of Science in Nursing program of the Canseco School of Nursing will be successful on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) licensure examination.

First Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
1___a. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
90% first time pass rate on National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN)

1___a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
2004:  partial data, 20 of 29 have tested to date—18 have passed = 90%

1___a. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
NCLEX-RN was revised for 2004, with new types of test items and a higher passing standard.  Faculty attended workshops offered by National Council of State Boards of Nursing and revised testing format to prepare students for new items.

Second Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:
_1__b. Means of Program Assessment & Criteria for Success:
Aggregate predictive score of 92% on Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI) Exit Examination.

_1_b. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
2004:  aggregate predictive score of 994, with 89% of graduates scoring in range predictive of passing the licensure examination.

_1_b. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
2004:  hosted proprietary review course; monitored and evaluated instruction; now reviewing other alternatives for this component.  HESI exam scoring changed; need to revise benchmark to reflect percentage of students scoring in range predictive of passing the licensure examination.

Pre-graduation self-assessment survey administered and evaluated by School of Nursing Evaluation Committee; targeted 85% employment plan in region.

_2__a. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
2004:  85% pre-graduation, although several of those surveyed remained unsure of intent.

_2__a. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
2004:  Program faculty discussed possible issues with hospitals; facilitated local recruitment activities

Second Means of Assessment for Outcome Identified Above:

One year follow-up survey administered and evaluated by School of Nursing Evaluation Committee;  target 85% employed as RNs in region.

Program faculty conduct follow-up surveys in odd years; therefore, the survey was deferred for this year.

_2__b. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
Previous results indicate concerns regarding overtime and understaffing in local facilities.

Pre-graduation self-assessment survey administered and evaluated by School of Nursing Evaluation Committee; target 90% rate clinical competence good to excellent.

2004:  98% of those surveyed rated clinical skills good to excellent

_ 3__a. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
2004:  reviewed changes in health care facilities and patient profile; expanded out of town specialty experiences; close review of emergent care clinical to include new disaster preparedness and bio-terrorism requirements.

HESI exit exam administered during Senior Seminar Course (NURS 4190); sub scores in recommended range for safety and implementation, as verified by School of Nursing evaluation committee.

_ 3_b. Summary of Assessment Data Collected:
2004:  Safety sub-score 933; Implementation sub-score 975. Both sub-scores are above the 900 recommended score.

__3__b. Use of Results to Improve Instructional Program:
2004:  close attention to planning and analysis portions of intervention, as well as to maintain or improve the level of these scores.
