Even though Mario C. López is only two semesters away from graduating from TAMIU with his BBA, he has already made his dreams a reality. Mario is the young co-owner of ABC Radio Controlled Hobbies. He, along with other family members, discovered long ago a niche market for entertainment and radio controlled vehicles. The business has recently moved to a 3,600 square-foot store that specializes in electric and gas powered planes, cars, boats and helicopters. For Mario, hobbies can stimulate creativity and promote patience. “It takes time to build one of the plastic cars or plane models,” Mario said.
He has also started a line of large die-cast collectable cars. The store offers trains and rocket models - great for high school physics projects. Mario attributes his business success to the family’s collective efforts in keeping the business going.

Sandra Alvarez del Castillo
’00 developed a passion for education when she was 10 years old. At this young age, Sandra would gather young children at her Colonia Guadalupe neighborhood teaching them the alphabet and numbers. This love for education, led her to a career in education. Today after 30 years as an educator at United Independent School District, she continues with that passion as Executive Director for Campus Intervention. Sandra enjoys her job to the fullest because "It entails working very closely with the principals of UISD schools to provide leadership in implementing instructional accountability."
“The past 30 years have blessed me with countless, priceless experiences that will certainly assist me in my present position. I firmly believe that as educators we can make a difference in our students’ lives by meeting their diverse needs," she adds, "All students can learn and will learn, maybe not in the same way and at the same time, but they can learn. After all is said and done, the students don’t care how much you know, but they know how much you care.”
Sandra is married to Homero Alvarez del Castillo, Jr., a registered nurse. They have one son, Homero Alvarez del Castillo, III, a pharmacist in Dallas, TX.
