Hazlewood Act
Veterans who meet the following qualifications are eligible for the Hazlewood Act.
Texas resident when entered and exited the service;
Been honorably discharged;
Have at least 180 days active duty.
The Texas A&M international University Veterans Benefits Assistant requires the following documents in your Hazlewood file:
1. Copy of your DD214
2. Eligibility letter from the Department of Veterans Benefits. Call the Veterans Administration at 800-827-1000 and ask for a letter of eligibility for Hazlewood waiver for Texas Veterans. This letter will state that you have exhausted all your regular benefits;
3. Letter from Financial Aid Office that you are not on default on any educational loans and, for undergraduates, not eligible for the PELL grant program. Please Note: If the Pell Grant is not large enough to cover all tuition and fees, Hazlewood may make up the remaining balance. Please see Veterans Affair Assistant in the Office of the Registrar. Undergraduates must apply for financial aid which includes filing the free financial aid evaluation form (FAFSA) and being evaluated for aid. This process takes two months or more and may delay receipt of Hazlewood waiver for a semester;
4. TAMIU Application (pdf) for Hazlewood Waiver
Your Hazlewood exemption file must be complete by census date (12th class day in regular semester and 4th class day on summer) as published in the University Calendar in order for the Hazlewood Waiver to be invoked for that semester. When all four items are received in the Office of the University Registrar, your application will be reviewed by the University Registrar for approval.
If approved the Hazlewood Act exempts you from tuition, building use fees, course fees and computer use fees. The student service fee must be paid by the 20th class day in Fall and Spring or by the15th class day in a summer session.
