Jose Maldonado, center, president of the Laredo Gateway Rotary presents the Paul Harris Fellow Award to John Adams, left and Miguel Conchas '76

The Laredo Gateway Rotary Club rolled out the red carpet Tuesday at the Laredo Entertainment Center to honor Miguel Conchas '76, and John Adams, TAMIU adjunct professor, with the distinguished Paul Harris Fellow Award.

“I am extremely honored — I never expected it,” said Conchas as he mingled before the award ceremony.  “The biggest reason to feel honored is that it comes from my peers, people that I work with and people that I see on a daily basis, and to all of a sudden be recognized by them, means a lot.”

Adams concurred, “It’s a tremendous honor — the Rotary is one of the oldest clubs in the city of Laredo.  This is a real big honor to be considered for this along with Miguel Conchas.”

The ceremony was attended by nearly 200 guests, who had the opportunity to show their support and gratitude for the leadership roles of the honorees.  Jose Maldonado '79, Rotary president, gave the welcoming remarks, while the invocation was given by Rotarian Jorge Gonzalez '87.  After that, Rotarian Jose Compean led the group in singing “Vive Le Rotary.”

With Tuesday’s announcement, Conchas and Adams join the likes of Senator Judith Zaffirini, U. S. Representative Henry Cuellar '82, Judge Mercurio Martinez Jr. and TAMIU President Ray Keck III in receiving this prestigious award.
