Ford AutMus Fest Rocked Laredo!

Danielle Gomez Marketing Chair, AutMus Fest 2006

It is truly amazing how much Laredo’s concert offerings have grown in the one year since AutMus Fest’s first concert. As promised, the Ford AutMus Fest 20062006 Ford AutMus Fest rocked Laredo! It is hard to believe that a scholarly group of “stiffs” like the TAMIU Alumni Association, and I say that playfully, being a proud alumni member myself, managed to pull off such an awesomely successful music festival with performers of Ozomatli’s caliber.

More than 4,000 people attended the 13 hour long event held on the North end of the TAMIU grounds, which made for a perfect venue for the outdoor music festival. Unlike other Laredo festivals, there were no perils of mud or dirt to wade through in order to enjoy the outdoors. Instead, green grassy lawns and mild South Texas weather welcomed all in attendance. Warm sunshine, cold drinks, delicious food, fun and games, and of course great music made for a great backdrop for Laredoans to enjoy AutMus Fest, while helping the TAMIU Alumni Association raise money for scholarships. Throughout the day families and children flooded the TAMIU lawn with their fold-out chairs and blankets, while groups of adults began arriving later in the afternoon to see the evening performances.  Grammy Award-Winning Ozomatli was the headlining performer. The experience of watching them live was utterly intoxicating. The combination of different sounds and rhythms like Reggae, Salsa, Cumbia, and even Middle Eastern influences were packed and bottled in the music sets like Molotov cocktails waiting to explode. For an encore, Ozomatli took to the lawn with their fans and created a giant tribal drum circle. Drums and trumpets lead concertgoers into a conga line to finish out the evening.

The TAMIU Alumni Association wants to extend our biggest and most sincere “THANK YOU” to every sponsor, volunteer, coordinator, vendor, and business partner that helped us pool together our resources and make AutMus 2006 possible. Ford Motor Company and Sames Motors; Miller Lite; and BMP Radio; without your support, this would not have been possible. Mike Cortez, Mr. and Mrs.Hank Sames, Evelyn Cain, Kiko Trevino, and Raul Rodriguez are the true shining stars that made our vision a reality. Now, thanks to your generous efforts, you will make the dreams of so many college bound students a reality as well.

Thank you to so many of our other fantastic sponsors that generously gave of their time and resources to help make our event possible. These great organizations are Allstate and Marcus Moreno Insurance Agency; IBC; Smirnoff, Falcon International Bank, A-1 Collision Supercenter, Nova Star Communications, Laredo Medical Center, Wright & Associates, Popeyes; RC Cola, Big Red, Ozarka, TAMIU, R & S Feed Stores, City of Laredo, Time Warner Cable, Zachry Construction Corp., and Hale Designs.  To our creative teams and local media partners, we send you endless thanks and appreciation for all of your ideas, support, and hustle!

And last but not least, thank you Dr. Keck, and the ENTIRE TAMIU staff and volunteers. Your contribution is immensely appreciated. The Ford AutMus 2006 proved worthy of its return, so much so, AutMus Fest 2007 will be Laredo’s most anticipated musical event of the year. Rock on TAMIU Alumni! We can’t wait for next year.
