Sometimes, life’s biggest lessons actually occur outside
the classroom. That’s the case with TAMIU’s participation
in “The Big Event,” a time-honored tradition of giving back
to the community, which celebrated its seventh offering in
2015.
Over 300 students locked arms to help the South
Texas Food Bank organize food, package strawberries, and
engage in healthy competitions as they completed their
tasks.
Mayra Hernández, director of TAMIU’s Office of
Student Conduct and Community Engagement, said “The
Big Event” is all about TAMIU students giving back.
“This lets students show appreciation to our
community and strengthens a sense of community between
Laredoans and TAMIU students. It is a way our students can
give back,” Hernández explained.
Born at Texas A&M University in College Station in
1982, “The Big Event” has been adopted by dozens of
universities and now serves many communities across the
nation. It’s become an international observation with events
now planned in Germany, Italy, Pakistan and Spain, among
others.
All TAMIU students can participate in “The Big Event.”
The 2016 Big Event is scheduled April 2, 2016.
