TAMIU History Professor Olivas Awarded
Mellon Fellowship
Dr. Aaron Olivas, assistant
professor of history, spent two
months as a summer research
fellow collecting data for his book
manuscript, “Loyalty and Disloyalty in
Spanish America During theWar of
the Spanish Succession.”
His appointment as an Andrew
W. Mellon Foundation Fellow at the Huntington helped
expand his sections on the influence of the English Atlantic
World on Spanish America under the Later Stuarts.
Professor Inducted Into
TAMUS Chancellor’s Academy
of Teacher Educators

recognized by A&M
System Chancellor John
Sharp this year for significant contributions to the field of
teacher education.
Dr. Rohitha Goonatilake, mathematics professor
and chair of the Department of Mathematics and Physics,
was inducted into the Chancellor’s Academy of Teacher
Educators at the Chancellor’s Century Council annual
meeting in Austin.
The Academy recognizes individuals who have made
significant contributions to the field of teacher education
and highlights the role of the A&M System in producing
K-12 teachers for the State of Texas.
TAMIU Names Domínguez Head for
Emerging Engineering Programs
TAMIU has selected a petroleum engineer,
government official and academic to develop emerging
engineering programs at the University.
Dr. Guillermo Cruz Domínguez Vargas now directs
the University’s planned growth in the College of Arts and
Sciences’ School of Engineering, with specific interest in
engineering and petroleum engineering.
The University currently offers a pre-Engineering
curriculum and a Bachelor of Science in Systems
Engineering. It has been granted permission to develop
additional engineering programs including petroleum
engineering.
Domínguez, a native of Mexico City, holds his
bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from the
Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), his
Masters, in Petroleum Engineering, was also received at
UNAM. His Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering was earned at
the University of Southern California.
