Major Themes in British Literature, 18th Century to Present

Three semester hours.

This course explores diverse topics in British and/or British colonial literature from the dawn of the Enlightenment (eighteenth century) to the present day—effectively, the period of Britain’s emergence as a world power and of its literary products’ status as world literature. Topics vary, such as intense examination of textual depictions of Britain’s engagement with scientific discovery and exploration; of the rise and fall of the Empire and the management thereof; of the roles of women and colonized “Others;” and of Britain’s place in the world today. Course may be repeated when the topic changes. Prerequisite: Graduate standing.
