Problem of the Month
We, the Mathematical Society of TAMIU, believe that everyone, math lovers and haters, has the innate ability to think mathematically, and that everyone should be given a chance to have fun by flexing their math brains. We have decided to sponsor the “Problem of the Month,” and reward you with great prizes for solving our problems; prizes such as Buck's tickets and fine dinners at various restaurants.
We will post a few mathematical problems every month, which, even though they do not require too much knowledge of advanced math, nonetheless, they do require that you think hard, experiment, analyze, and generally stretch your “problem solving” ability to its fullest.
There are two levels of problems: Elementary and Advanced. The Advance Problems are more suitable for Mathematics or Science major college students, but we encourage anybody to attempt to solve them. Solve whichever problem you can and send the solution to us ( address provided at the bottom ).
Faculty members of TAMIU will look at the solutions you send in and select the best solution by a high school student and the best solution by a college/university student. Each of the two winners will receive a prize.
Rules
*Only one solution per problem per contestant will be accepted. *Problems that are solved by a group will only receive one prize if selected winners.
*Use school notes, do research, anything goes, just make sure you acknowledge every source, including web-pages, books, teachers.
*At the end, write the solution in your own words, with an explanation of how you solved it and a justification of why your method is correct.
Mail or take solutions to:
