It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the webpage of the newly created Department of Humanities at Texas A&M International University.  The new Department is the result of TAMIU's commitment to promoting true interdisciplinary studies-in unison with the University's mission to create students for leadership roles in an increasingly complex, culturally diverse state, national, and global society-by facilitating fruitful synergies among the different disciplines that the Department houses: English, History, Spanish, and Philosophy, plus the International Language Institute, which offers courses in ESL and in foreign languages.  Hence, besides the offer of more traditional B.A.s and/or minors in these disciplines, the Department is ready to launch in Fall 2012 a M.A. Master of Arts in Language, Literature, and Translation, a unique program in the state of Texas, and even nation-wide, that builds on the bilingual and bicultural idiosyncrasy of the border region, by training students in dual-language and translation skills, and at the same time providing them with intensive instruction in one or more disciplines of choice.  Likewise, and also starting in Fall 2012, the Department will participate in the joint M.A. Master of Arts in History and Political Thought, a  new program in conjunction with the Department of Public Affairs and Social Research, which seeks to bridge the disciplines of History and Political Science in an innovative curriculum that will no doubt attract a great variety of students from different fields.

This is indeed an exciting time to chair a Department with such a bright and promising future ahead, both because of the quality of its programs and its outstanding faculty, fully committed to the success of our mission.  Whether you are a current or prospective student, an alumnus or a colleague from another institution, I hope this webpage provides you with the information that you may need to get to know us and our activities.
