Areas of Certification &Minimum Semester Credit Hours Requirement for Candidates to be Assigned to a
Public School Classroom

 

Completion of Minimum Semester Credit Hours for Teaching Assignment with a minimum grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, and a passing score on the prescribed TExES examination.  Applicants’ conferred degree must meet these credit hour requirements. Bilingual and ESL certification is an additional endorsement to the probationary/standard teaching certificate.

EC – 6th Generalist
Twenty-four (24) semester credit hours in a combination of subjects, to include English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, and pass the TExES EC – 6th Generalist (191).

EC – 6th Bilingual Generalist
Same as EC – 6th Generalist, plus six semester hours of Spanish, and pass the TExES EC – 6th  Generalist (191), BTLPT (190), Bilingual Supplemental (164).

4 – 8th  Generalist
Thirty-six semester hours in a combination of core subjects, to include English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, and pass the TExES 4 – 8th Generalist (111).

4 – 8th Bilingual Generalist
Same as 4 – 8th Generalist, plus six semester hours of Spanish, and pass the TExES 4 – 8th  Generalist (111), BTLPT (190), Bilingual Supplemental (164)

4 – 8th Single Subject Teaching Field:
Twenty-four semester hours in the teaching field, with at least 12 advanced semester hours in the subject.

4 – 8th Composite:
Thirty-six hours semester hours in the composite field with a minimum of 6 semester hours in each discipline and 18 semester hours of advanced – junior/senior level coursework.

8 – 12th  Single Subject Teaching Field:
Twenty-four semester hours, with at least 12 advanced hours in the subject content area.

8 – 12th Composite:
Thirty-six semester hours in the composite field with with a minimum of 6 semester hours in each discipline and 18 semester hours of advanced – junior/senior level coursework.

All-Level Special Education EC – 12:
Twenty-four semester hours in a combination of subjects, including English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, and pass the TExES EC – 6th Generalist (191) or the 4 – 8th Generalist (111) or an 8 – 12th single subject field and pass the special education exam (161).
