The School Counseling Program
The primary mission of the School Counseling Program at Texas A&M International University is to train highly skilled and competent practitioners to meet the growing demand for school counselors. We at TAMIU are in a unique position, both geographically and demographically, to provide the counseling community with exceptional bi-lingual and bi-cultural counselors to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding, and largely underserved, Hispanic population. The program is in transition and is restructuring to comply with the criterion established by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The curriculum combines counseling theory and technique courses with practicum and field-based internship experiences. Of interest to the faculty working with school counseling program students is the provision of opportunities for the student to become involved in appropriate professional associations, interdisciplinary activities, and various theoretical models and associated techniques particularly efficacious for the Hispanic population.
Organization of the School Counseling Program is designed around a course of study that will meet the following objectives:
-
To provide a knowledge base in the areas of helping relationships, human growth and development, social and cultural diversity, career development, and research and program evaluation.
-
To provide a theoretical and practical background in case conceptualization, treatment planning, collaborative consultation and assessment in both educational and non-educational settings.
-
To provide opportunities to develop practitioner skills which are consistent with professional, ethical, and legal guidelines.
-
To provide coursework, laboratory experiences, research, group collaboration, practicum and internship experiences to expand opportunities for self-development.
-
To provide opportunities for professional development through continuing education seminars, in-service, access to current professional literature, and information on employment opportunities and trends in the counseling profession.
-
To provide opportunities for the development and expansion of a personal theoretical and practical approach to counseling consistent with the setting in which the student is interested.
-
To develop a strong working knowledge and collaborative relationship with local support services.
-
To develop a strong professional counselor identity through membership and participation in state and national counseling associations (Texas Counseling Association and American Counseling Association) and special interest divisions of these associations.
-
To provide the knowledge, awareness and skills to become a culturally competent certified/licensed counselor.
