Mission Statement

The Fitness and Sports Program in Texas A&M International University creates, interprets, applies, and disseminates knowledge in order to help facilitate students in becoming responsible professionals who can meet life's intellectual and ethical challenges, be life-long learners, and establish successful careers as teachers, scholars, leaders, and promoters of physically active, healthy lifestyles in a multicultural society.

Fitness and Sports Curricular Goals

1) Provide outstanding undergraduate and graduate education with an emphasis on critical thinking and problem solving by applying the principles of active learning and experiential education in all courses, thus helping students learn how to meet future intellectual and career challenges through life-long learning.

2) Prepare students for successful, productive careers in exercise science, teaching physical education, and sport psychology through specifically designed curricula that present current information and understanding in the disciplines.

3) Provide students with additional learning experiences by offering internships, and opportunities to participate in community programs.

4) Help students become members of a community of life-long learners and increase their learning time, opportunities, and activities outside of the classroom through the integration of electronic media such as the Internet in the courses.

Fitness and Sports Research Goals

Extend our understanding of the human condition in the movement domain through quality faculty and student research within content-specific disciplines.


Fitness and Sports Leadership and Community Building Goals

1) Serve the local community through the development and promotion of student-led after school and adult education programs related to physical activities.

2) Provide students with leadership opportunities through Fitness and Sports-sponsored student clubs and through academic experiences focused on leadership development, team building, teaching, and communication.

Fitness and Sports Administrative Goals


1) Enhance curricular activities and course work leading to successful performance on state and national certification exams such as the exam

2) Increase the number of full-time faculty and instructors in the Fitness and Sports program and enhance the quality and breathe of the educational experience for the students.

3) Improve current research facilities and establish a laboratory budget.

4) Evaluate achievement of program and individual goals using objective measures as much as possible.
