The mission of the College of Science & Technology is to provide the highest quality undergraduate and graduate education in the traditional scientific disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics, and earth & planetary sciences, as well as in mathematics/computational sciences and nursing. Our primary goal is for students to master the fundamentals of scientific knowledge and attain the competence that will allow them to interpret data and attempt to explain newly observed phenomena. Distinction in undergraduate and graduate instruction is an important component of this goal.
The College of Science & Technology is relatively new with its current programs of study being an outgrowth of the former Division of Arts & Sciences in the School of Education and Arts & Sciences.
In a landmark decision Laredo State University became a Member of The Texas A&M University System on September 1, 1989. The University name, Laredo State University, was changed to Texas A&M International University in 1993.
The College of Science and Technology was officially established in the University's organizational structure in September 1994. The college goes by the acronym CoST, and it is composed of two distinct yet complementary administrative departments, the Department of Natural Sciences and the Canseco School of Nursing.
The Department of Natural Sciences is headed by a Chair; the Canseco School of Nursing is headed by a Director. The Executive Secretary to the Dean of the College of Science and Technology is Ms. Terry Lobo (Phone Number: (210) 326-2440; email: mtlobo@tamiu.edu).
Department of Natural Sciences - Current programs include course work leading to the Bachelor of Arts degrees in Biology, Mathematics, and Physical Science. A Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry will be implemented in Fall 1997. Programs have been proposed that will also enable us to offer Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and Environmental Science. We are also looking forward to offering graduate course work leading to a Master of Science degree in Biology and to a Master of Science degree in Mathematics. Also in the planning is a 3+2 degree program in engineering in conjunction with Texas A&M University - College Station. In all, these new mathematics and science intensive programs with greater opportunities for research and career path preparation are anticipated over the next several years.
Certification in secondary teaching may be obtained by including as electives 24 semester hours of Professional Development courses plus six hours in the support areas.
School of Nursing - Accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners for an RN/BS program, the School of Nursing provides an opportunity for Registered Nurses to build upon previous education in health-related professions. The School has also been accredited for five years by the prestigious National League of Nursing. A Master of Science degree in Nursing is being contemplated in the near future. Basic and advance science courses are provided from the Natural Sciences curriculum, while all the School of Nursing courses are upper division courses.
