READING (EDRD)

EDRD 0100 Reading Development I. One semester hour.

Reading comprehension, rate, flexibility, and vocabulary development will be emphasized, with a focus on reading text materials. Basic study skills, including time organization and management and test-taking strategies, will be taught. Placement into the course will be determined by reading pretest scores of students who have not passed the TASP. One hour lecture and one hour laboratory per week.

EDRD 0101 Reading Development II. One semester hour.

Emphasis will be placed on refining skills and strategies for reading and comprehending a variety of text materials. Library skills will be taught. Placement into the course will be determined by reading pretest scores of students who have not passed the TASP. One hour lecture and one hour laboratory per week.

EDRD 0102 Reading Development III. One semester hour.

The course will focus on developing higher-level thinking skills: including analytic and critical thinking; and evaluation and synthesis of written information. The use of the library for research, including skills for deriving and combining information from a variety of sources will be taught. Placement will be determined by reading pretest scores of students who have not passed the TASP. One hour lecture and one hour laboratory per week.

EDRD 3303 Teaching Reading and Language Arts. Three semester hours.

This course provides a comprehensive survey of the elementary school reading and language arts instructional program, with an emphasis on the foundations of reading and the language arts as a developmental process. Appropriate methods and materials for the elementary school are examined. Field activities will include: (1) observations and interviews of a designated teacher regaring the reading methods used, with an analysis of classroom reading instruction with the reading model provided in the classroom; (2) development and implementation of a "Language Arts Activity Box" containing instructional materials for teaching phonics, vocabulary development, comprehension, metacognition, writing, oral language, and creative/critical thinking strategies. Students must earn a grade of C or better to successfully complete the course. Prerequisites: junior standing, a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5, and admission to teacher education.

EDRD 3305 Reading Materials for Individualized Instruction. Three semester hours.

This course is designed to help the student select, develop, and use appropriate instructional materials and strategies to meet the individual reading needs and learning styles of all children. The course will include a survey of reading curricula and models of reading program organization in the elementary and secondary school. Prerequisites: junior standing, and a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5.

EDRD 3309 Teaching Reading in the Schools. Three semester hours.

This course is designed to acquaint students with a variety of reading programs to foster early literacy, beginning reading, and content area reading development. Preservice teachers will be engaged in field activities requiring: (1) field research relating to reading curricula instruction, including methodologies, sources and resources, and evaluative processes; and (2) application of evaluative procedures, products, and devices. Students must earn a grade of C or better to successfully complete the course. Prerequisites: a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 andcompletion of required Block I courses with a grade of C or better.

EDRD 3311 Classroom Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Difficulties. Three semester hours.

This course addresses the characteristics and learning patterns of all children. The focus will be on developing a knowledge of formal and informal classroom reading diagnosis procedures and the design of appropriate remediation techniques. Prerequisites: EDRD 3303, and EDRD 3305, and a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5. (Formerly EDRD 3411)

EDRD 3111 Classroom Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Difficulties Lab. One semester hours.

Students carry out appropriate classroom reading diagnosis and implement remediation with school children in a clinical laboratory setting under the supervision of the instructor. This course must be taken concurrently with EDRD 3311. (Formerly EDRD 3411)

EDRD 4303 Special Topics in Secondary Reading: Strategies for Teaching Reading in the Secondary School. Three semester hours.

The course will focus on the integration of reading and language arts in the content areas to develop general and specialized vocabularies; and reading and language arts skills, including critical thinking, research, and study skills. Also emphasized will be methods for teaching reading and content to diverse school populations, especially ESL students. Prerequisites: junior standing, and a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5.

EDRD 4305 Organization of Reading Curriculum and Materials in the Middle and High School. Three semester hours.

This course is designed to present the student with theory and procedures for studying curricula in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains. Prerequisites: a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 and EDRD 4303.

EDRD 4307 Reading and Language Arts in the Secondary School. Three semester hours.

This course will explore the organization and implementation of reading programs in middle and secondary schools that include listening, speaking, and writing instruction. Special emphasis will be placed on the use of juvenile and adolescent literature, as well as on the developmental nature of reading and the language arts. Prerequisie: EDRD 4305.

EDRD 4309 Teaching Reading in the Intermediate Grades. Three semester hours.

This course focuses on teaching word attack skills, comprehension skills, study skills, vocabulary, and strategies for reading content materials. Classroom diagnosis and evaluation are introduced. Prerequisites: EDRD 3309, and EDRD 4305.

EDRD 4311 Clinical Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Difficulties.. Three semester hours.

This course focuses on techniques of clinical diagnosis and correction of reading difficulties. Prerequisites: EDRD 3311 and a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5. (Formerly EDRD 4411)

EDRD 4111 Clinical Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Difficulties. Four semester hours.

Through the use of formal assessment instruments, students diagnose reading problems of clinic participants and subsequently prescribe, implement, and monitor appropriate instruction under the supervision of the instructor. This course must be taken concurrently with EDRD 4311 (Formerly EDRD 4411).

EDRD 4399 Issues in Reading. One-Three semester hours.

This course examines current topics in the field of reading. May be repeated once when topic changes. Prerequisites: permission of the instructor.

EDRD 5303 Theoretical Models and Processes of Reading. Three semester hours.

The following processes of reading are explored: language, visual perception, word recognition, comprehension, metacognition, and culture. Additional attention is given to developmental interactive, inferential, transactional-psycholinguistic, and affective models of reading. Prerequisite: graduate standing.

EDRD 5305 Content Reading Instruction. Three semester hours.

The course focuses on foundations of reading instruction, with emphasis on research and its applications regarding reading and learning from different types of texts through the use of various methods, materials, and programmatic schemes, especially those appropriate for secondary school reading programs. Prerequisite: graduate standing.

EDRD 5309 Seminar in Reading. Three semester hours.

This course will focus on current topics in reading, including research, theories and practices of teaching reading; and special issues and problems in reading. Prerequisite: EDRD 5303.

EDRD 5313 Organization and Evaluation of Reading Programs. Three semester hours.

Strategies for organizing and evaluating reading programs in grades K-12 which provide for effective interaction among all members of the school staff will be explored. Prerequisite: graduate standing, and six hours of reading (three of which may be taken concurrently with this course).

EDRD 5323 Individualized Instruction in Reading. Three semester hours.

Teaching strategies for individualizing instruction in reading to provide for the effective use of teacher-made and commercially prepared materials, with attention to the diverse needs of children, are explored. Special emphasis will be given to application of whole language philosophy in reading instruction, student-centered instruction, and authentic assessment techniques. Prerequisites: EDRD 5313, and EDRD 5419.

EDRD 5330 Clinical Practicum In Reading. Three semester hours.

Working with students referred for remedial reading instruction, the student will develop and demonstrate competency in the diagnosis, prescription, and remediation of reading difficulties in a clinical setting. In-depth case studies will be completed. Prerequisites:EDRD 4311, EDRD 4111, EDRD 5313, and EDRD 5419

EDRD 5399 Special Issues in Reading. One-Three semester hours.

Course examines timely topics of concern to educators involved in making decisions regarding reading. May be repeated once when topic changes. Prerequisites: graduate standing and permission of the instructor.

EDRD 5419 Advanced Diagnosis of Reading Difficulties. Four semester hours.

Students will use formal and informal instruments to diagnose reading problems. Supervised casework is required and reviewed. Forty-five hours of lecture and fifteen hours of laboratory are required. Laboratory fee: $3.00. Prerequisites: EDRD 3311 and EDRD 3111, EDRD 5303
