SPECIAL EDUCATION (EDSE)

EDSE 1101 Practicum in Special Education. One semester hour.

Entry level direct experience with individuals with disabilities. Participants will spend four to six hours per week in nonacademic environments gaining firsthand experience. Class meetings will be scheduled at least four times per semester. Participants must provide own transportation.

EDSE 1102 Practicum in Special Education II. One semester hour.

Entry level direct experience with individuals with disabilities. Participants will spend four to six hours per week in varying environments gaining firsthand experience with individuals with disabilities. Class meetings will be scheduled periodically during the semester as feedback sessions. Participants must provide own transportation.

EDSE 2103 Practicum in Special Education III. One semester hour.

Participants will spend four to six hours per week in primarily educational environments working directly with individuals with disabilities. Class meetings will be scheduled periodically during the semester as feedback sessions. Participants must provide own transportation. Prerequisites: EDSE 1101 and/or EDSE 1102.

EDSE 2304 Developmental Aspects of Disabling Conditions. Three semester hours.

Normal growth and development as well as the developmental aspects of disabling conditions will be covered from conception through adulthood in a multicultural society. Emphasis will be placed on comparing developmental milestones and diagnostic as well as instructional implications. Prerequisites: EDSE 1101, EDSE 1102 and/or EDSE 2103. May be taken concurrently with prerequisites.

EDSE 3305 Introduction to Special Education. Three semester hours.

A survey of special education with an emphasis on federal and state legislation and litigation as well as mild, moderate, severe, and profound levels in all federally identified areas of disability. Includes observation of individuals with handicapping conditions in varying settings. May be taken concurrently with EDSE 1101, EDSE 1102, EDSE 2103 and/or EDSE 2304.

EDSE 3310 Environmental Organization and Programming for Children with Mildly Disabling Conditions. Three semester hours

This course will focus on a detailed analysis of the environmental organizations involved in the education of children with mildly disabling conditions. These include mainstream education inclusion, consultative teaching, and content mastery programs. Emphasis will also include definitions, prevalence and characteristics of students demonstrating mild levels of physical, motor and sensory impairments, learning disabilities, mental retardation, and emotional or behavioral disorder. Prerequisite: EDSE 3305.

EDSE 3315 Environmental Organization and Programming for Children with Moderate, Severe, or Profound Handicaps. Three semester hours.

The educational focus of this course will be on the structure and use of resource rooms and self-contained programs as well as special schools and hospital or other long-term care programs designed for children demonstrating moderate, severe or profound levels of physical, motor, and sensory impairments, learning disabilities, mental retardation, and emotional and/or behavioral disorders. Prerequisite: EDSE 3305.

EDSE 3320 Measurement and Evaluation for Special Education. Three semester hours.

An overview of assessment principles and procedures, statistical concepts and testing instruments used in special education. Extensive direct experience testing children in varying educational settings will be included. Prerequisite: a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5. May be taken concurrently with EDSE 1101, EDSE 1102, EDSE 2103 or EDSE 2304.

EDSE 4394 Conferencing and Consultation in Special Education. Three semester hours.

Strategies, skills, and procedures involved in working with parents and other family members of children with disabilities as well as with professional colleagues in varying settings are the points of focus. Emphasis will also be placed on working from within an educational framework for the purpose of enhancing student social adjustment and academic development. Prerequisite: EDSE 3305.

EDSE 4399 Issues in Special Education. One-Three semester hours.

This course examines current topics in the field of special education. May be repeated once when topic changes. Prerequisites: permission of the instructor.

EDSE 5305 Survey of Special Education. Three semester hours.

A survey of special education as seen from the perspective of normal psychomotor, cognitive, social, and behavioral norms; with the focus on a basic overview of the federally determined categories of disabling conditions. Also includes an overview of the national legislation, litigation and advocacy trends; the Texas Rules and Regulations for Special Education; as well as research in the field. Prerequisites: EDCI 3305, and EDRD 3309. May be taken concurrently with EDSE 5310 and EDSE 5315. (Formerly ED 491)

EDSE 5310 Etiology, Characteristics and Educational Programming for Students with Mildly Involved Disabilities. Three semester hours.

This course includes definitions, incidence/prevalence rates, and characteristics of students demonstrating mild levels of physical, motor and sensory impairments, learning disabilities, mental retardation, and emotional/behavioral disorders, and their functional consequences in the educational process. The educational focus will be on inclusion within the mainstream program; and cooperative service programs involving regular and special education teachers, consultative teaching, and content mastery programs. Prerequisite: EDSE 5305. May be taken concurrently with EDSE 5305

EDSE 5315 Etiology, Characteristics and Educational Programming for Students Demonstrating Moderate, Severe, and Profound Disabling Levels. Three semester hours.

This course includes definitions, incidence/prevalence rates, etiologies, and characteristics of moderate, severe and profound levels of physical, motor, and emotional/behavioral disorders, and their functional consequences in the educational process. The educational focus will be on resource room and self-contained programs as well as special schools, hospitals or other long-term programs. Prerequisite: EDSE 5305. May be taken concurrently with EDSE 5305.

EDSE 5320 Measurement and Evaluation. Three semester hours.

This course emphasizes application of standardized, teacher-made, and special tests concepts. Each student will develop a broad knowledge base of tests used in all areas in the assessment of students demonstrating disabling conditions. Emphasis will also be placed on factors involved in multicultural, multi-ethnic assessment. Prerequisite: graduate standing. May be taken concurrently with EDSE 5330 and EDSE 5340.

EDSE 5325 Classroom and Behavior Management of Exceptional Children. Three semester hours.

Each student will demonstrate mastery of major concepts and techniques of effective classroom and behavior management of exceptional students experiencing academic and/or behavioral difficulties. Prerequisite: graduate standing.

EDSE 5330 Practicum in Academic Achievement Assessment. Three semester hours.

Each student will experience performance-based training on the administration, scoring and interpretation of the basic, individually administered academic achievement assessment procedures currently in use in the public schools, such as the Wide Range Achievement Test, Woodcock-Johnson Achievement Tests, Key Math, Peabody Indiviual Achievement Test, and other selected achievement tests or procedures. Bilingual students will also master the Spanish versions of the tests when appropriate. May be taken concurrently with EDSE 5320 and EDSE 5335. Prerequisites: EDSE 5305, EDSE 5320, and admission in the Educational Diagnostician Program. Laboratory fee: $75.00.

EDSE 5340 Practicum in Psychometrics. Three semester hours.

This course includes performance based training on major individual intelligence or ability tests, that is the Stanford-Binet, Wechsler scales, and other selected individual intelligence scales. Each student will master the administrative techniques for each test, administer each test to a specific number of students, score, and interpret the results. Bilingual students will also master the Spanish versions when appropriate. May be taken concurrently with EDSE 5320. Prerequisites: EDSE 5305, EDSE 5320, and admission in the Educational Diagnostician Program. Laboratory fee: $75.00

EDSE 5345 Practicum in Educational Diagnostics. Three semester hours

This course requires the satisfactory completion of a field experience under the direction of a practicing educational diagnostician and supervision by a University professor. Participants will work in the field of diagnostics, with the administration, scoring and interpreting test instruments and procedures. Experience will include students, school personnel, parents in conferences, and admission review and dismissal. The practicum student will also be expected to complete a site-based project designed in cooperation with the diagnostician mentor and university supervisor. May be taken concurrently with EDSE 5335. Prerequisites: completion of at least thirty hours of the required course work for the master's program, including EDSE 5305, EDSE 5330, and EDSE 5340.

EDSE 5350 Trends and Issues in Diagnostics. Three Semester Hours.

This course will provide the student with an overview of selected areas pertinent to the diagnostic area: neurophysiology, alternative assessment, and learning potential assessment; as well as general trends and issues in the field. Each student will also be introduced to varying diagnostic tests or procedures new to the field. Bilingual students will also master the Spanish versions of the new tests or procedures when appropriate. May be taken concurrently with EDSE 5330 and EDSE 5345. Prerequisites: EDSE 5305, EDSE 5320, EDSE 5340, EDSE 5330.

EDSE 5390 Practicum in Teaching. Three semester hours.

Will focus on the supervision of interns as they make pre-instructional, during instruction, and post-instructional decisions to help monitor and evaluate teaching effectiveness. (Required in a special education classroom in the event that at least one of the students three years of prior teaching experience was not in a special education setting.)

EDSE 5399 Special Issues in Special Education. One-Three semester hours.

Course examines timely topics of concern to educators involved in making decisions regarding special education. May be repeated once when topic changes. Prerequisite: graduate standing and permission of the instructor.
