SPAN 1301 Introductory Spanish for Non-Native Speakers I. Three semester hours. (2 semesters, 5 hours per week)

An oral and written introduction to Spanish for students with no previous knowledge of the language. The course emphasizes the need to acquire an ear for the sound of Spanish and an introduction to the languages grammatical structures. This is the first part of a two part introduction to Spanish. Credit for this course granted after successful completion of SPAN 1302.

SPAN 1302 Introductory Spanish for Non-Native Speakers II. Three semester hours. (2 semesters, 5 hours per week)

An oral and written introduction to Spanish for students with no previous knowledge of the language. The course emphasizes the need to acquire an ear for the sound of Spanish and an introduction to the languages grammatical structures. Prerequisite: SPAN 1301 or equivalent course.

SPAN 1303 Spanish for Native Speakers. Three semester hours.

A course for students from an Hispanic environment who need a systematic presentation of the grammatical structures of Spanish. General review stressing the languages grammatical structure. Students who receive an A or B in this course will move from SPAN 1303 to SPAN 2300. Students with a grade below a B will be required to enroll in SPAN 1306 after this course.

SPAN 1305 Intermediate Spanish I. Three semester hours.

For students who have finished the beginning sequence of 6 hours, or who, as a result of testing, demonstrate their readiness for this course. A continuation of SPAN 1302. Emphasis includes both the oral and written language. Students begin to encounter literary forms. Local Spanish language resources and media are used to help students exploit the linguistic resources of this Hispanic community and develop proficiency in their total use of Spanish. Prerequisite: SPAN 1302 or SPAN 1303 or equivalent course.

SPAN 1306 Intermediate Spanish II. Three semester hours.

Students with a strong record in SPAN 1303 may enroll in this course. This course is the last in a four-course sequence for students new to the study of Spanish. As students complete their study of the grammar structure of Spanish, they are encouraged and prepared to make extensive use of the Hispanic environment which surrounds our University. Prerequisite: SPAN 1305 or equivalent course.

SPAN 2300 Advanced Grammar and Composition. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Required of all Spanish majors and minors. Students will read and comment upon short texts chosen from modern Spanish and Spanish American writers, newspapers, and magazines. Readings are chosen both to aid students to perfect their writing skills and to provide them the widest possible exposure to contemporary Hispanic culture. The courses principal objective is to ensure that students master a clear, effective, and mechanically correct prose style in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPAN 1306 or equivalent course.

SPAN 2301 Spanish Literature Before 1700. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. A chronological survey from the Poema de Mio Cid to the works of Calderón de la Barca.

SPAN 2302 Spanish Literature After 1700. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. A chronological survey beginning with the Enlightenment and including the romantics, 19th-century poetry and drama, the emergence of the Generation of 1898, and literary forms of the twentieth century.

SPAN 2303 Spanish American Literature from the Conquest to Modernism. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. A chronological survey beginning with Columbuss letters, chronicles of the Spanish conquistadors, Cortess letters, poetry and prose through Moderism.

SPAN 2304 Spanish American Literature of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. A chronological survey including modernism, fiction and prose writings of the nineteenth century, and origins and contemporary development of the modern novel and short story in Spanish America. Prerequisite: SPAN 2300 or equivalent course.

SPAN 2324 Spain: Civilization and Culture. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Survey of the geography, history, literature, art, and music of Spain. Emphasis on reading and vocabulary development. Also basic grammar, oral expression and written composition. Prerequisite: SPAN 2300 or equivalent course. May not replace SPAN 2301, SPAN 2302, SPAN 2303 or SPAN 2304 as prerequisites for 3000- and 4000-level courses.

SPAN 2325 Spanish America: Civilization and Culture. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Survey of the geography, history, literature, art, and music of the Spanish American countries. Emphasis on reading and vocabulary development. Also basic grammar, oral expression and written composition. Prerequisite: SPAN 2300 or equivalent course. May not replace SPAN 2301, SPAN 2302, SPAN 2303 or SPAN 2304as prerequisites for 3000- and 4000-level courses.

SPAN 3301 Studies in Spanish Literature Before 1500. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Including prose and poetry, the Castilian epic and the evolution of the romancero and its New World descendant, the corrido. Prerequisite: SPAN 2301 or SPAN 2302.

SPAN 3302 Studies in Spanish Literature of the Golden Age. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Drama, poetry, novela picaresca, the mystics. May be repeated for credit when topics vary. Prerequisite: SPAN 2301 or SPAN 2302.

SPAN 3303 Cervantes and Don Quijote. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. An introduction to and careful reading of Cervantes classic, a work which represents the origin of the modern novel and remains the fundamental book of Hispanic culture. The course will focus upon the text of Don Quijote, studied in the social, cultural and intellectual context of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Prerequisite: SPAN 2301 or SPAN 2302.

SPAN 3305 Studies in Spanish American Literature: Poetry and Short Story. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. The study of two major genres of Spanish American literature, works of interest both to students of modern Spanish American culture and to those planning graduate work in Spanish. The topic will be determined each time the course is offered, mindful of needs of both students and faculty. Works studied would include:

Poetry: Darío, Neruda, Vallejo, Borges

Short story: Cortázar, Rulfo, García Márquez, Borges.

Prerequisite: SPAN 2303 or SPAN 2304. May be repeated when topic changes.

SPAN 3315 Advanced Grammar I. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. A review of the basic concepts of Spanish grammar followed by a more detailed study of those concepts as they appear in a diversity of cultural and literary readings. In addition to reading, the development of the skills of listening, speaking, and writing will also be given attention. Prerequisite: six hours of Spanish.

SPAN 3316 Advanced Grammar II. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. A thorough study of the finer points of Spanish grammar with the purpose of developing appropriate writing skills. In addition to writing, the development of the skills of listening, speaking and reading will also be given attention. Prerequisite: SPAN 3315.

SPAN 3317 Spanish Linguistics. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. A detailed linguistic study of the Spanish language and also a contrastive comparison with other languages. Prerequisites: SPAN 2301 or SPAN 2302 plus six hours of 3000- or 4000-level Spanish.

SPAN 4300 Contemporary Spanish American Society in Literature. Three semester hours.

This course examines the relationship between art and the political, historical, and social realities of the Spanish American society through fiction written by some of its most distinguished writers such as García Márquez, Allende, Vargas, Llosa, Borges, Castellanos, Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, etc. Prerequisite: SPAN 2301/SPAN 2303 or consent of instructor.

SPAN 4301 The Spanish Novel of Nineteenth-Century. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Study of the main types of Spanish novel during the nineteenth century: historical, costumbrista, regional, psychological, and naturalist. Prerequisites: SPAN 2301 or SPAN 2302 plus six hours of 3000- or 4000-level Spanish. *May be taken for graduate credit.

SPAN 4302 The Spanish Novel of the Twentieth-Century. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. The novel in Spain from the end of the nineteenth century to the present. Prerequisites: SPAN 2301 or SPAN 2302 plus six hours of 3000- or 4000-level Spanish. *May be taken for graduate credit.

SPAN 4303 The Spanish American Novel. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. A study of Spanish Americas most widely acclaimed genre. Students will examine representative works of the older generation of novelists, including Sarmiento and Güiraldes, Gallegos and Rivera, as well as more modern writers such as Carpentier, Cortázar, Asturias, Vargas Llosa, Fuentes, Rulfo, and García Márquez. The novels historical, social, cultural and intellectual ambience will form an integral part of the course. Prerequisites: SPAN 2301 or SPAN 2302 plus six hours of 3000- or 4000-level Spanish.

SPAN 4304 The Generation of 1898. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. The Generation and its influence upon the growth and development of Spanish thought. Prerequisite: SPAN 2301 or SPAN 2302.

SPAN 4305 Studies in Modern Spanish Literature: Drama and Poetry. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. The study of two major genres of modern Spanish literature, works of interest to a student planning graduate work in literature and to one interested in the intellectual and artistic life of modern Spain. The topic will be determined each time the course offered, mindful of the needs of both students and faculty. Topics include:

Drama: Benavente, García Lorca, Calvo Sotelo, Buero Vallejo, Sastre, Valle-Inclán.

Poetry: Machado, Juan Ramon Jiménez, and García Lorca and his generation.

Prerequisite: SPAN 2301 or SPAN 2302. May be repeated when topic changes. *May be taken for graduate credit.

SPAN 4309 Studies in Mexican Literature. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Mexican literature from time of the Conquest to the present. Emphasis on representative authors and outstanding works. Prerequisite: SPAN 2303 or SPAN 2304. *May be taken for graduate credit.

SPAN 4310 Advanced Spanish Grammar and Syntax. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Required course for teaching candidates who plan to teach Spanish. The course reaches beyond SPAN 2300. Offers a thorough investigation of the multiple forms of modern Spanish throughout the world, and will ensure that students preparing to teach the language are familiar with the history of grammar usage and terms. Prerequisite: six hours of 3000- or 4000-level Spanish.

SPAN 4311 Teaching Spanish as a Native or Second Language. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Study of the linguistic principles, methodological theories, and classroom techniques conducive to effective and efficient teaching of Spanish as a native or second language. Recommended for prospective teachers. Prerequisite: SPAN 4310 or equivalent course.

SPAN 4312 History of the Spanish Language. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Using as a point of departure Rafael Lapesas classic, Historia de la lengua española, this course traces he linguistic evolution of the Iberian peninsula from Vulgar Latin to the many modern languages spoken there today. Students, especially those planning a career in teaching or contemplating graduate studies in Spanish, will find modern Spanish and its multiple variations comprehensible as a part of an evolution which began in Roman times and remains characteristic of the language. Colonial Spanish and its relics still apparent in the speech of Mexico and the Hispanic Southwest will receive special consideration. Prerequisites: SPAN 2301 or SPAN 2302 plus six hours of 3000- or 4000-level Spanish.

SPAN 4317 Hispanic Folklore. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. A survey of Hispanic folklore. Examination of the principal genres of folklore as found in Spain, Spanish America and the Hispanic Southwest. *May be taken for graduate credit.

SPAN 5301 Studies in Spanish Literature. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Directed research in selected aspects of Spanish literature, with particular emphasis on bibliography and research procedures. May be repeated once when topic changes. Prerequisites: twelve hours of 3000- or 4000-level Spanish and graduate standing.

SPAN 5302 Problems in the Spanish Language. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. In-depth study of special problems in the Spanish language. The course deals with aspects of the sound, grammatical or semantic structures of standard Spanish. Special emphasis on identification of regional non-standard varieties, providing opportunities to acquire and use standard forms of the language. May not be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: graduate standing.

SPAN 5303 Studies in Hispanic American Literature. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Directed research in some previously selected aspects of Hispanic American literature, with particular emphasis on bibliography and research procedures. May be repeated once when topic changes. Prerequisites: twelve hours of 3000- or 4000-level Spanish and graduate standing.

SPAN 5307 Seminar in Castilian Literature. Three semester hours.

Conducted in Spanish. Research methods in the field of Spanish literature. May be repeated once when topic changes.

SPAN 5308 Seminar in Hispanic American Literature. Three semester hours.
