STEPS TO STUDY ABROAD

 

CHOOSE A STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM

Visit the Office for International Education and meet with the study abroad advisor for an initial advisement session. Research study abroad information in the study abroad library (LINK: PROGRAMS) . Once you have made a program selection schedule a second meeting with the study abroad advisor, prior to filling out your study abroad application.

 

FILL OUT A TAMIU STUDY ABROAD APPLICATION (LINK: SA APPLICATION)

Complete your application, and obtain supporting documents and signatures.  The preferred deadlines for your study abroad application are as follows:

 

Spring October 15

Summer/Fall March 15

 

SUBMIT A PROGRAM APPLICATION  

Program specific applications are available in the study abroad library. Copies of completed applications must be kept in the student's file in the Office for International Education.

 

SUBMIT A SIGNED ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT FORM     

This form comes together with your study abroad application. However, you may submit it later than the study abroad application deadline. For information concerning the possibility of transferring specific credit, students should contact academic advisors in the departments awarding similar credit at TAMIU.

 

The academic advisement form does not constitute pre-approval of credit transfer. Final approval on credit transfer is determined after materials have been presented for review upon completion of the study abroad program.


APPLY FOR THE INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP FEE (LINK: STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION)     

Eligible students may want to apply for the TAMIU International Education Scholarship Fee (IEFS) and others. The deadlines for the IEFS scholarship are:

Summer/Fall 2005 April 1, 2005

 

SUBMIT THE STUDY ABROAD EMERGENCY AND LIABILITY PACKET (LINK: STUDY ABROAD EMERGENCY & LIABILITY FORMS)

All students participating in a TAMIU study abroad program are required to complete and submit the Study Abroad Emergency and Liability Packet before they can be registered for their study abroad program.

ATTEND THE PRE-DEPARTURE ORIENTATION     

Students are required to attend a pre-departure orientation during the last full semester prior to their study abroad. Students sign up for the orientation session by phone 956.3626.2565 or by clicking on the preferred date and sending us an email

 

Pre-departure orientation meetings are scheduled as follows:

 

Spring 2005 November 26, 1–5 pm

Summer/Fall 2005 April 22, 1-5 pm

ONCE RETURNED FROM YOUR STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM ATTEND AN EXIT INTERVIEW

Upon return to TAMIU you must visit the International Education Office to complete an interview. This interview consists of the following:

•  discussion of the study abroad experience

•  a program evaluation

•  review of the credit approval process

START THE CREDIT PROCESS

It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the courses taken abroad are evaluated by TAMIU faculty in departments where similar courses are taught
