SOCIAL SECURITY INFORMATION

Do You Plan to Work?

You must provide original documents showing your age, identity, F-1, immigration status and proof that your school has authorized you to work to the Social Security Administration (SSA) office.

Eligibility to Work

To get a Social Security number for work, you must provide us either:

• a letter from your designated school official stating that you are authorized to work and are enrolled in a full course of study; or

• a letter from your designated school official stating that you are authorized to work and a certified college transcript that shows you are currently enrolled in a full course of study; or

• a pay stub or letter from your on-campus employer verifying your employment, along with a Certified transcript that shows you are currently enrolled in a full course of study; or

• a letter from your designated school official stating that you will receive a scholarship in exchange for teaching services, along with a certified transcript that shows you are currently enrolled in a full course of study.

All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. SSA cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents.

How To Apply For A Social Security Number

If you want to get a job on campus, you should contact ISS. They can tell you if you are eligible to work on campus and give you information about available jobs. Also, your school may approve certain limited off-campus employment, as permitted under Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) regulations. If your school has authorized your work, you can get a Social Security number.    If you are temporarily in the United States while attending college or language school with a nonimmigrant student F-I classification, your school may ask you for your Social Security number. Some colleges and language schools use Social Security numbers as student identification numbers. If you do not have a Social Security number, the school should be able to give you another identification number. A Social Security number is only assigned to people who are authorized to work in the United States. It is used to post wages to Social Security records so workers can become eligible for Social Security benefits. Social Security will not issue you a number just to enroll in school.
