Program Dates

Program

TAMIU’s College of Education will offer a five-week study abroad program in Madrid, Spain. Directed by Dr. Diana Linn, you will experience Spain’s capital in an up-close and personal way.   The CAPA Madrid Center is a lively place with a strong sense of community, created by the close interaction between Spanish and international students.  Regular activities include outings to museums, concerts, and lectures.  Program participants will meet with Ministry of Education representatives, visit Spanish public schools and teach a lesson.  Included in this program is a 50 Euro cultural fund for each student and a monthly metro pass.

Week one Madrid Welcome and orientation.  Class sessions from Monday - Thursday.  Free time Fri-Sun.  Activities may include dinner at a traditional Madrid restaurant, El Museo del Traje, travel on the Teleferico, and a visit to El Rastro (Madrids bustling flea market).
Week two Madrid Class sessions from Monday - Thursday.  Free time Fri-Sun. Visits may include San Antonio de La Flordia Festival, watch a bullfight, and other social activities as organized by International House.
Week three Madrid Class sessions from Monday - Thursday. Free time Fri-Sun. Visits may include Parque Juan Carlos I, European Day of Music, and Casa de Campo.  Other social activities as organized by International House.
Week four Madrid Class sessions from Monday - Thursday.  Free time Fri-Sun.  Visits may include Parque del Oeste, Flamenco Lessons, Previous visits also have included trips to Segovia and Toledo.
Week five Madrid Class sessions from Monday-Thursday.  Free time Fri-Sun.  Visits may include trips to Segovia and Toledo.  Social and farewell activities as organized by International House.

Accommodation

Students live within commuting distance of the CAPA center in shared apartments (double occupancy).  Meals are not included in the housing arrangement.

Program Cost

Program cost is $3,650, excluding the roundtrip airfare to Spain, meals, and TAMIU tuition/fees.

4 March Application and $200 non-refundable application fee due to OIE
18 March Program Installment of $ 1,500
8 April Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation
29 April Remaining program balance of $ 1,950 due
Applications will not be processed unless they are complete and received by the stated deadline. 

Application Process

1)  Turn in your study abroad application and pay your application fee here (mastercard/visa - visit with OIE if you prefer to make a payment by check or cash)

2)  Apply for any of the TAMIU study abroad scholarships for which you qualify.

3)  Print out a Financial Aid Budget Form for your personal use.  OIE will provide an update of your educational expenses directly to the Office of Financial Aid.

4)  Complete and turn in your Waiver and Liability Packet by 1 May 2011

Study Abroad Scholarships

TAMIU/OIE offers two scholarships for study abroad.  Qualified TAMIU students may complete their application and supporting documents and submit them to OIE together with their study abroad application.  You will be notified via email of your award and the award disbursement date.

Course Information

All students will automaticaly participate in

CAPA Course             Contemporary Spanish Society (20 instruction hrs/not for credit)

And choose one or both of following:

EDDP 4324/5327       Teaching Diverse Student Populations (3 SCH) - taught in Madrid

SOCI 3310

EDSE 3305               Introduction to Special Education (3 SCH) - taught online

Program Requirements

Students must have been approved by Dr. Linn for acceptance into the program.

Refunds**

Withdrawal from a study abroad program must be made in writing to OIE.  The application fee of $200 is non-refundable, unless TAMIU cancels the program.  The application fee will be applied to your total program cost.  After this, TAMIU will refund recoverable tuition and costs as determined by OIE.  Refunds will be calculated from the date OIE is notified in writing of your intent to withdraw.  TAMIU is not responsible for indirect costs paid directly by students, including but not limited to passport fees, vaccinations, and transportation costs.

**TAMIU reserves the right to adjust program fees or cancel any program without prior notification; however, every effort will be made to provide information on cancellations in a timely manner.  In the event of cancellation, TAMIU will refund application fees and recoverable program fees.
