Early Language Literacy in China Program Dates June 11 - July 2, 2011. Program TAMIU’s College of Education will offer a three-week study abroad program in the cities of Hong Kong, Shen Zhen and Beijing, China. In this program you will learn about the cultural impact on children’s language and literacy development. While in Hong Kong and Beijing, students will benefit from visits to a number of local schools and universities, and will interact directly with children, parents, and teachers. There are scheduled meetings with the Ministry of Education, the observation and teaching of some lessons, including the joint-teaching of a “language and literacy” class with local school teachers. To learn more directly about Chinese cuisine, tradition, and customs, students will have the opportunity to live with a local family for two days. Other cultural immersions activities include visits to the Chinese Folk Culture Villages (Shen Zhen), and the Forbidden Palace, Summer Palace, historical market, and Great Wall (Beijing). This program is directed by Dr. Xuesong Wang, a native of China, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. The courses are available for either undergraduate or graduate credit. Accommodation Students will be living in residence halls or hotels (double occupancy). Program Cost Program cost $2,810, excluding the round-trip airfare to Hong Kong, meals, TAMIU tuition and fees, and personal expenses. Timetable for Appplications and Payment
Applications will not be processed unless they are complete and received by the stated deadline.Application Process 1) Turn in your study abroad application, and pay the application fee here (mastercard/visa/american express only - visit with OIE if you prefer to make a payment by check or cash) 2) Apply for any of the TAMIU study abroad scholarships for which you qualify. 3) Print out a Financial Aid Budget Form for your personal use. Study Abroad Scholarships TAMIU/OIE offers two scholarships for study abroad. Qualified TAMIU students may complete their application and supporting documents and submit them to OIE together with their study abroad application. You will be notified via email of your award and the award disbursement date. Course Information All students are required to enroll in: EDEC 4362/5321 Language and Literacy for Young Children (3 SCH) Program Requirements Students must have been approved by Dr. Wang for acceptance into the program. Refunds** Withdrawal from a study abroad program must be made in writing to OIE. The application fee of $200 is non-refundable, unless TAMIU cancels the program. The application fee will be applied to your total program cost. After this, TAMIU will refund recoverable tuition and costs as determined by OIE. Refunds will be calculated from the date OIE is notified in writing of your intent to withdraw. TAMIU is not responsible for indirect costs paid directly by students, including but not limited to passport fees, vaccinations, and transportation costs. Contact Information
