Coming Spring 2008

ANGEL Coming in Spring 2008!

Last year, the Office of Information Technology received notice that support for WebCT 4.1 would be phased out by the end of 2007. In response to this, OIT evaluated the newest versions of Blackboard’s (formerly WebCT) Course Management Systems, Campus Edition 6.0 and Vista 4. After comparing our current version and the newest versions of Blackboard and noticing the drastic differences between the two, it was decided to take a look at other Course Management Systems. The Office of Information Technology along with the Technology Advisory Committee compared several different systems. In November of last year, an informational forum for the faculty featured the two best products, Blackboard’s Campus Edition 6 and Angel Learning Management System 7.1 (now in version 7.2). Of the two systems, ANGEL Learning Management System 7.2 simply has more features that meet the needs of our faculty and student body.

History

Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, ANGEL Learning was founded in July 2000.  Tired of the limitations and constraints of their previous course management system, the ANGEL Learning Management System evolved from research and teaching experience at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.  The initial research system deployed in 1996 became Indiana University's OnCourse.  ANGEL LMS was created using early system concepts and was made more generally applicable and maintainable with a tailorable user interface, flexible backend database integration, and a high performance, reliable component architecture.  Today, though ANGEL Learning has grown from a campus-based organization of university researchers and instructors to a profitable firm with global reach, the company stays loyal to its academic roots.  From its conception, Angel Learning has maintained its commitment to open-source programming concepts.

Features

  • ANGEL natively supports Podcasting, Wikis, Blogs, online journals, unlimited threaded discussions, and community groups.
  • ANGEL’s PDA mode adapts Angel for small screens and allows learners to download lessons, unread course mail or forum messages to their PDA for offline viewing.
  • ANGEL’s Agent Technology allows automated personalized email at scale based on performance or activity; it can execute predefined actions on the instructor’s behalf on a scheduled or even-driven basis.  It can also release appropriate content based on instructor-determined parameters.
  • ANGEL’s Report Console represents a wealth of data-mining opportunities in one central location.  Whether your interest is tracking all aspects of an individual learner, class, milestone, or specific content, the Report Console makes gathering and viewing data convenient and easy.
  • ANGEL is the first LMS to include a feature that models the real-world office hour scenario. Virtual office also supports desktop sharing, whiteboard, controlled chat and instant messenger.
  • After logging in to the system, the student and faculty member can expect to see instant notification of new mail, discussion posts, announcements and who’s online.
  • With over 30 themes ranging from Biology to Criminal Justice to Composition and more, faculty members can further customize the look of their classes.
  • ANGEL supports multiple faculty members within a class and students can email any of them individually.
  • And many other features not listed here.
