Week 1

May 14 - Arrival in Havana
Welcome lunch 
Orientation
Check-in at homestays
Drive Tour Vedado Downtown and Miramar: Monument to the Maine Battleship, Hotel Nacional, Columbus Cemetery
Visit to the Revolution Square
Walking tour in Habana Vieja. Explore the historical and oldest district of Havana; walk along Plaza Vieja, Mercaderes street, Plaza de Armas, and the Cathedral
Visit to Taller Experimental la Grafica
 
Meeting with the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the People (ICAP)
Visit the Callejón de Hamel, a street cultural center led by painter and muralist Salvador González Escalona. His internationally known artwork deals with the roots and influences of African religions in Cuba.
Visit to Union de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC)
Trip to La Cabaña Fortress: Explore one of the largest fortresses of 1700s in Latin America and enjoy the Cañonazo de las 9 performance
Visit the International School of Journalism José Martí
Presentation about the Institute and its work. Conference-dialogue about environment, climate change and journalistic coverage of natural disasters in Cuba.
Meeting with members of the Community Project Espiral Proyecto Espiral is a grassroots project dedicated to educate young people on environmental issues and sustainable development. Discussion on various pressing issues in Cuba with college students and young professionals
 
Visit the Literacy Campaign Museum and meet History Professor Luisa Campos and Director of the Museum
Visit to the home and art studio of ceramist and painter José Fuster Learn about his art community project
Cuban Socialism in Transition
Cultural activity with the community project Okan-Tomi that explores and reworks Afro-Cuban dances and music traditions
 
Community service with Proyecto Espiral in Santa Maria
Visit to the Museum of the Revolution

Week 2

Departure to Cienfuegos (2 day stay)
Visit to the Community Project Abracadabra
Walking tour of Cienfuegos, recognized as a UNESCO
Visit Jose Marti Park
 
Visit to the University of Cienfuegos
Visit to the Botanical Gardens
Return to Havana
Visit to the University of Havana
Visit to the Antimperialist Tribune
Farewell dinner

 Study Abroad Admission Requirements

*Students interested in participating that do not meet study abroad requirements may be reviewed on a case by case basis for admissions.

Program Refunds**

Withdrawal from a study abroad program must be communicated by submitting the Study Abroad Withdrawal Form . The application fee of $200 is non-refundable, unless TAMIU cancels the program. TAMIU will refund recoverable tuition and costs as determined by IE. Refunds will be calculated from the date IE is notified in writing of your intent to withdraw based on the program payment schedule. TAMIU is not responsible for indirect costs paid directly by students, including but not limited to passport fees, vaccinations, and transportation costs.

*TAMIU reserves the right to make changes to this itinerary as deemed appropriate by the program leader due to unforeseen circumstances. However, every effort will be made to adhere to the itinerary as closely as possible.
**TAMIU reserves the right to adjust program fees or cancel any program without prior notification; however, every effort will be made to provide information on cancellations in a timely manner. In the event TAMIU cancels the program, TAMIU will refund application fees and recoverable program fees.
