Educational
System
TAMIU offers the best of education
with a state-of-the-art infrastructure and flexible curriculum. The
faculty is proficient in their respective fields, and most have doctoral
degrees.
Since the education system in the
US is slightly different from that of other countries, the prospective
students should have an overview of it so that they are well prepared.
One academic year is comprised of two semesters- Fall (Aug-Dec) and
Spring (Jan-May) with optional summers.
Classroom
Teaching:
Classes may last from 1 to 2.5 hours. Most graduate classes are in the
evenings to cater to the needs of working students. Lectures are usually
supplemented with audio visual aids.
Assignments:
Assignments form important parts of the course work and contribute to
the final grade. Students are required to work on various assignments
throughout the semester. Usually group assignments are given to instill
team spirit and collaboration. Students have to submit research /term
papers at the end of the semester, which requires perusing various journals,
books and the Internet.
Public speaking and oratory skills are honed by requiring students to
make presentations.
Grading System:
TAMIU has a Grade Point System on a scale of 1 to 4.0. Each course usually
earns 3 credit hours. Students having financial aid or fellowship from
the University must maintain a minimum GPA as stipulated by the University.
Exams:
Like assignments, exams are scattered throughout the semester. They
are an important part of the final grade. Final exams are conducted
in the last week of the semester.
Tips:
1. Plan the work and work the plan. Students should not accumulate work
till the last moment.
2. Since the medium of instruction is English, students should be comfortable
speaking and understanding it. Reading books and watching television
programs and movies can help them quickly pick up American English.
3. The University provides free-of-cost tutoring services at CASA(Center
for Academic and Scholastic Aptitude) and Writing Center.
Fellowship:
Texas A&M International University,
as the name reflects, represents an international blend of students
on campus. To promote international student admissions, the University
offers various fellowships programs. Students accepting fellowships
have to work 60 hours of work each semester and 15 hours in summers.
The work may entail the following:
1. Working under an assigned Professor as a graduate research assistant,
it involves research work, grading, proctoring, and sundry.
2. Working as a research assistant in the office of The Western Hemisphere
Trade Center. It involves data entry, proof reading and poring through
various business journals and databases.
