ROSCA DE REYES PARTY
Tuesday, January 6 -- UNC will once again host a Rosca de Reyes party at 3 p.m., Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 125. A rosca is a crown-shaped sweet bread, served on Three Kings Day (Jan. 6) in honor of the magi who were present at the Christ child's birth. Within the bread are small dolls which represent baby Jesus. Traditionally, whoever gets a doll is obligated to throw a party on or before February 2. For our celebration, there will be multiple dolls and the recipients will work together to organize the follow-up party in February. This event was very successful last year with lots of learning, laughter and good food. Special thanks to Rosie Espinoza who will donate the rosca, and Alejandro Martinez, Jr, who will donate hot chocolate. Please RSVP to newcomers@tamiu.edu.

TROLLEY TOUR
Saturday, November 1, 2003-- the University Newcomer's Club organized a Laredo Heritage Tour and a visit to the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum. There were about 22 people at the event, which started at the museum, went to the Washington's Birthday Celebration Association Museum, continued to the San Augustine Church, and then everyone boarded a history trolley and toured many of the interesting areas of downtown as well as the Laredo Community College campus, formerly Ft. McIntosh. The University Newcomer's Club is extremely grateful to Nick M. Reyna of the Laredo Convention & Visitors Bureau, who hosted the tour, paid for the tickets, provided refreshments as well as lovely gift bags for all the participants. UNC will be working with them to make this tour an annual event.
CARNE ASADA
November is a busy month and the carne asada, scheduled for Saturday, November 15, 2003, did not happen as planned. Very few people RSVP'd and we decided to reschedule the event for another time. Special thanks to Gustavo Salazar, for offering to cook, and Lilia Cantú for offering the use of her family's ranchito. Please keep checking back for the new date.
