Now Available at TAMIU

Local and area aspiring engineers in middle and high school may now pick up applications for the Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program (TexPREP) at Texas A&M International University in Student Center, room 118. The program offers students an opportunity for students to be exposed to college-level mathematics, science and engineering studies.

The program is scheduled for June 4 through July 26. Application and testing fee is $30; deadline is Feb. 16. Space is limited to 150 qualified students. Late applications will only be accepted on a space available basis. Late fee is $50.

Applications are available online at tamiu.edu/contedu

“The TexPREP program aims to increase the number of competently prepared under-represented minority and female students from the TexPREP area who will ultimately pursue science, mathematics, engineering and technology studies in college and to acquaint students with professional opportunities in science, math, engineering and technology,” explained Dr. Julio F. Madrigal, director, Office of Special Programs.

The program is free, but students will be responsible for their own transportation to and from campus, meals while on campus and their own school supplies such as notebooks, paper, pencils and any other supplies.

Application packets should include: application processing and testing fee; student application and supplemental form; 100-200 word essay from the student explaining his or her desire to participate in the program; two letters of nomination or recommendation from math or science teachers or counselors; latest official 2006/2007 transcript and grade report and GPA computation by counselor.

Students in the program will have the opportunity to take courses such as: logic, introduction to engineering, introduction to computer technology, introduction to computer science, topics in problem solving and research and study. They will also get to hear from speakers from local and state high-tech industries who will discuss current and future professional engineering and scientific opportunities. TexPREP will also provide career counseling with topics that include resume preparations, college financial aid and practice SAT exams.

University professors, visiting instructors from public schools and members of the working and teaching science and engineering community will teach the courses.
