TAMIU Presents Gilberto Soto and Sylvia Hazlerig in Concert

Texas A&M International University's Department of Fine and Performing Arts invites the community to a concert presenting Sylvia Hazlerig on harpsichord and Dr. Gilberto D. Soto on classical guitar Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.

The concert is free and the public is invited to attend.

Those attending the event can expect to hear interpretations of music by Claude-Louis Daquin, Bendetto Marcello, Francisco Tárrega, Isaac Albeniz, Sylvia Hazlerig and Antonio Vivaldi.

Dr. Soto, associate professor of music and fine and performing arts chair, said the concert will bring old and new friends together as Hazlerig, a former Laredoan and long-time Laredo Community College faculty member, visits the city from Colorado with a special gift.

"Ms. Hazlerig, who is going to be shipping a harpsichord from Canada for this concert, has generously decided to donate the instrument to our University," Dr. Soto said, "We thank her for her kindness and for returning to Laredo to grace us with her musical talent."

Hazlerig was born in Wyoming, but spent most of her life in Texas. She holds a master of arts degree in music literature from Central Missouri State University and a bachelor of music composition and theory degree from the University of North Texas. She formed part of the music and dance department faculty at LCC for 19 years, where she taught piano, strings, music theory, music appreciation and music literature.

Upon retiring in 1997, she moved to the mountains of Colorado, where she remains active as a performer and composer.

Soto holds a Ph.D. in music education and a master of music performance degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg . His bachelor's degree in education was earned from the University Autónoma del Noreste in Torreón, México.
