University Enrollment Climbs 7%, Semester Credit Hours Up 9%

Official figures submitted to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board indicate student enrollment at Texas A&M International University has climbed 7% for the Fall 1996 semester. Semester Credit Hours are also up 9%.

Official figures reflect all students registered after the 12th day of class including late-registration, adds and drops.

Total student enrollment at the University is 2,682. Last Fall's enrollment was 2,510. Semester credit hours, crucial to State funding formulas, are up from 21,769 to 23,726.

President J. Charles Jennett said this Fall's enrollment climb is the latest indicator of continued growth at A&M International.

"Since 1990, we've seen enrollment at A&M International grow 112%. This semester, we have students from over 26 countries joining Laredoans of all ages on what we consider one of the State's most technologically advanced campuses. With a talented faculty and a committed staff, we expect these students to join the more than 6,000 A&M International graduates here at home and around the world," Dr. Jennett said.

Jennett said the University projects continuing growth with the completion of Phase II, availability of student housing and approval of new programs by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

"The additional buildings in Phase II will help us to address program growth areas such as business and nursing. We'll also have a kinesiology facility on line which will allow us to initiate that program. New programs in development will continue to address the needs of our service area," he explained.

He said that a crucial addition to the University's new campus will be affordable student housing.

"The availability of affordable student housing will allow us to attract students from the surrounding area to the campus. This will also create a new dynamic in student campus life that is more in keeping with a traditional University setting," he said.

This fall semester at Texas A&M International University ends December 13. Spring semester 1997 classes begin January 13.
