Public Hearings Offered at TAMIU on
Proposed
Athletics and Recreational Fee Increases
Texas A&M International University students will have an opportunity
to vote on proposed athletics fee and recreational sports fee increases on
December 4, 5, and 6.
In advance of the vote, the University is hosting public hearings on the
proposed fee increases in designated tuition on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m.
and Monday, Dec. 3 at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.
The proposed
athletics fee increase will assist the University in its move from the NAIA
Athletic Conference to NCAA Division II (no football). The move to NCAA requires
additional funding levels for student scholarships and the athletics program
to meet NCAA, Division II requirements. Additionally, another sport, women’s
softball, is being added to the TAMIU program.
The proposed athletics fee increase will be $2 per semester credit hour.
The proposed recreational sports fee increase will help support augmented
programming and student fitness options that accompany the University’s new
Kinesiology and Wellness Recreation Center that was dedicated this Fall.
The opening of the new Center has brought three new sports and the extension
of service hours. The addition of lights to the University’s soccer field will
also bring expanded services and hours.
Both fees cannot be imposed unless approved by a majority vote of the students
participating in a general student referendum.
Students will be able to cast
their votes online on the University’s web site at: http://www.tamiu.edu/vote
If
approved, the new fees will take effect Fall 2008.
