TAMIU Volleyball Showdown Tonight at 7 p.m. Against HBU
The Texas A&M International University volleyball squad will conclude
the regular season with five home matches played over a four-day span,
beginning with Thursday's 7 p.m. showdown with conference power Houston
Baptist University. HBU is currently atop the RRAC East Division standings
with 12-0 conference record, followed by second place TAMIU with a 9-3
conference mark.
HBU has won every conference tournament title in the six-year history
of RRAC volleyball, compiling a 102-0 regular season conference match
record in the process. HBU leads the all-time series against TAMIU, 5-0.
After playing the Huskies, TAMIU will host UT-Permian Basin on Friday,
Bacone College and Paul Quinn College on Saturday and Bacone (again) on
Sunday.
A serving contest will be held between games two and three of Thursday's
match with Houston Baptist. Prizes will be available from Coyote Creek,
Wendy's and the TAMIU Bookstore.
Men's Soccer Notes
Defending Red River Athletic Conference champion Texas A&M International
is the number two seed in this weekend's RRAC Tournament, which will be
hosted by Northwood University. Northwood finished atop the RRAC regular
season standings with a perfect 8-0 conference record. TAMIU finished
second at
7-1 followed by College of the Southwest and Texas Wesleyan, which finished
tied for third with a 6-2 record. Northwood and Texas Wesleyan will play
the first semifinal game on Friday at 11 a.m. followed by the TAMIU vs.
Northwood match-up at 1 p.m. The two winners will play for the conference
title, and automatic bid to the NAIA Region VI Tournament, on Saturday
at 1 p.m. ... TAMIU and Northwood have split the four games in the all-time
series between the two teams, with the home team winning each contest.
Northwood won at home in TAMIU's inaugural season of 2002 before TAMIU
swept two games played in Laredo last season, including a 3-2 win in the
RRAC Championship game. Northwood snapped TAMIU's 14-game conference winning
streak earlier this season with a 5-2 win over the Dustdevils on Oct.
23 in Cedar Hill.
Women's Soccer Notes
TAMIU will make its first Red River Athletic Conference
postseason tournament appearance in the three-year history of the program
when the #4 seed Dustdevils face #1 seed and host Northwood on Tuesday
at 11 a.m.
College of the Southwest and Texas Wesleyan will play in the other semifinal
game on Tuesday. Tuesday's winners will play for the RRAC championship
title on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
... TAMIU has a shown steady improvement in conference play over the
last three seasons. After going 0-5 in RRAC play in its inaugural season
of 2002 TAMIU posted a 1-4 conference
mark last season. The Dustdevils improved to 2-3 in RRAC play this season,
securing the fourth and final conference tournament bid by a half game
over Bacone College.
Cross Country Notes
TAMIU's cross country teams will participate in the NAIA
Region VI Championships this Saturday at Oklahoma Baptist University
in Shawnee. Juniors Mark Vela and Anetra Matthews will be looking to secure
NAIA National Championships spots after strong performances at the Red
River Athletic Conference Championships last weekend.
The 40th Annual NAIA Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday,
Nov. 20 at E.P. Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
