A&M International Holds Annual Fall Dance Concert on Fri., Nov. 17

Entertainment seekers will be Broadway-bound as Texas A&M International University presents a lavish Fall Dance Concert featuring favorite selections from the best musicals of America and Spain.

The concert, called "The Best of Broadway and Zarzuela," will take place in the University's Kinesiology/Convocation Building on Fri., Nov. 17 at 8 p.m.

The community is cordially invited to attend. Admission is free.

Concert director Bede Leyendecker, assistant professor of dance at A&M International, said she and her group of dancers are creating a magnificent concert that audiences will find delightful.

"Planning this concert has been a lot of fun because of all the beautiful music that we have putting together. The dance repertoire includes jazz, ballet, tap, Can-Can, modern, and flamenco," Leyendecker said.

She noted her dancers, all A&M International students, are putting a lot of energy, time and effort to make their performances look fantastic.

Performers include Debra Canales, Alex Cardenas, Gladys Cardenas, Adriana Espinoza, Raquel Garcia-Rios, Veronica Garza, Janie Gonzalez, Claudia Hernandez, Claudia K. Hernandez, Paulina Hinojosa, Jacquie Hurtado, Oscar Hurtado, Patricia Lucio, Veronica Lugo, Erika Mendoza, Karina Mendoza, Laura Palacios, Amahet Peņa, Mary Ramirez, Jessica Ramon, Sylvia Ramos, Jackie Reyes, Laura Rodriguez, Sara Rodriguez, Rosaura Ruiz, Laura Sanchez and Athena Valdez.

Selections to be performed are from Fiddler on the Roof, Cats, West Side Story and Grease. Favorites from Zarzuela, the equivalent to Broadway in Spain, include "La Leyenda Del Beso," "La Vida Breve," "Spanish Medley," and the rhumba "Maruja Limon.'"

The song "Memory" from Cats will be interpreted by featured vocalist Sara Rodriguez, a student and dancer of Texas A&M International University, accompanied by pianist Fritz Gechter, assistant professor of music at A&M International.

Performances by the Vidal M. Treviņo Magnet School, the Curtain Call Music Studio, and vocalists Peggy Dietrick and Kathy Proffit will add magic to the event. Dietrick and Proffit will also serve as co-emcees for the concert.

"This is a good opportunity to show the talent that Laredo has to offer. We are so happy that these guest performers are participating as well," Leyendecker said.
