Men's Notes
The Week Ahead
After opening the season with five straight games against NCAA opponents,
Texas A&M International will travel to Oklahoma this week to open
Red River Athletic Conference play. TAMIU plays at Langston on Saturday
and Bacone College on Monday. Langston enters play this week with a 2-2
overall record while Bacone stands at 7-0.
TAMIU split two games played with Langston last season while dropping
two contests to Bacone. Last season's conference schedule was flipped
with the Oklahoma road-trip coming at the end of the season for the Dustdevils.
TAMIU was defeated at Bacone, 85-83, on Feb. 21 before pulling the road
upset over Langston, 78-74, on Feb. 23. The win over Langston started
a three-game season-ending winning streak for the Dustdevils.
TAMIU fought hard in the second half of Sunday's loss to defending Southland
Conference champion UT-San Antonio, finishing with a 39-37 scoring edge
and 23-22 rebound advantage against the Roadrunners during the second
20 minutes of play ... TAMIU has only one more game this season against
a NCAA opponent. The Dustdevils will make a return visit to Texas A&M-Kingsville
on Dec. 29.
TAMUK defeated the Dustdevils last Friday at the TAMIU Kinesiology and
Convocation Building. Kingsville holds a 3-0 advantage in the all-time
series against TAMIU ... Junior Andre Watson is off to a solid start to
his career with the Dustdevils. The transfer from Grayson County College
has scored in double-figures in four of five games and leads the squad
with a 12.8 points per game scoring average. Watson contributed a season-high
24 points against Texas A&M-Kingsville ... Senior Kyle Edwards has
recorded two double-figure rebound performances this season. He grabbed
10 rebounds in the season-opener against St. Mary's and 14 rebounds at
UT-Pan American on Nov. 23. Edwards ranks sixth in this week's RRAC rankings
in rebounds (7.2 rpg).
Women's Notes
The Week Ahead
Texas A&M International University opens Red River Athletic Conference
play this week with a two-game road-swing through Oklahoma. TAMIU plays
at Langston on Saturday before playing at Bacone College on Monday. Langston
enters play this week with a 0-6 record while Bacone has a 3-3 record.
TAMIU and Langston split two games played last season while the Dustdevils
swept the two-game series with Bacone. The Dustdevils went 1-1 in last
season's trip to Oklahoma, winning at 78-61 at Bacone on Feb. 21 before
dropping a 70-67 decision at Langston on Feb. 23.
Saturday's win over St. Edward's was TAMIU's first-ever against a NCAA
Division II opponent. The Dustdevils are now 1-5 all-time against NCAA
D II competition, with all five of the previous losses coming last season.
TAMIU is 0-2 all-time against NCAA Division I competition and 1-0 against
NCAA Division III competition ... Sophomore Vanessa Villarreal has been
named RRAC Player of the Week for games played Nov. 21-27 after averaging
20.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games played last week. She scored
a season-high 27 points in Saturday's win over St. Edward's. Villarreal
earned conference Player of the Week honors once last season ... Sophomore
Jermina Tomlinson grabbed six steals in the win over St. Edward's, marking
the fourth time in her career that she has recorded six or more steals
in a game. Tomlinson recorded a career-high seven steals against Concordia-Austin
last season.
