Proposed Athletics Fee to be
Voted
on by TAMIU Student Body
March 6-8
Texas A&M International University students will have an opportunity to
vote on a proposed Athletics Fee March 6,7 and 8.
The proposed fee will assist the University in its move from the NAIA Athletic
Conference to NCAA Division II (no football). The move to NCAA requires
additional funding levels for student scholarships and the athletics
program to meet NCAA, Division II requirements.
The fee may not be imposed unless approved by a majority vote of the students
participating in a general student referendum.
The fee’s implementation is also contingent on legislation being passed
to allow the fee to be charged. If passed by the 80th Legislature, the fee
will begin Fall 2007.
The proposed fee will be $5 per semester credit hour. It will cap at 15 hours
during both the Fall and Spring semesters and at nine hours for Summer Sessions.
“If passed, this fee revenue will go towards our entry into the NCAA
Division II and, in addition, fund larger portions of the growing athletics
program while also increasing athletics scholarships,” said Jose Garcia,
vice president for finance and administration.
Voting will take place on-line for all currently enrolled students. Students
should visit http://onecard.tamiu.edu to
cast their vote.
Open forums on the proposed fee increase were held Jan. 25-26 and Feb. 20,
2007.
