This Tuesday, December 1, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students will join the global giving day, #Giving Tuesday, to help harness the collective power of students, charities, families, businesses and others to encourage philanthropy and celebrate generosity worldwide.

#GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to kick off the holiday giving season and inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities and give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support.

Jazmin Gibeaut, TAMIU student philanthropy coordinator, has helped organize the University’s response and says it counters consumerism with community.

“TAMIU students are remarkable givers and we wanted to help frame an opportunity to remind everyone that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism,” Gibeaut explained, “With all the world’s troubles today, the most meaningful gift we can give is the commitment to work together to build a better world.”

She noted that since 2010, over 2000 TAMIU student volunteers have given 90,223 volunteer hours, a monetary impact equal to some $1.9 million.

“Our hope is that #GivingTuesday will become a part of the holiday tradition at TAMIU and that each year our students will share their time or treasure by giving back to TAMIU through Athletics, scholarships, international experience initiatives and various University college efforts,” Gibeaut added.

She explained that on #Giving Tuesday the TAMIU Student Philanthropy Council will set up a Giving Station from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Student Center Rotunda to collect donations and write a thank you card to those who have already made their donations.

TAMIU is communicating the opportunity with a special public service announcement through social media and asking students to share their story on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag  #Giving Tuesday.  They can also highlight their personal giving story at a dedicated Facebook site, facebook.com/tamiustudentphilanthropy.
