Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) ranked exceptionally well in a new ranking by the online source, ToBecomeATeacher.org, receiving the top ranking among Texas universities that offer bachelor’s degrees in education.

TAMIU ranked first among schools that offer bachelor’s degrees for students looking to become a teacher in Texas. The University ranked third among schools offering master’s programs. The complete rankings are available at http://tobecomeateacher.org/how-to-become-a-teacher-in-texas

The rankings were derived using a complex algorithmic tool, along with supporting data provided from schools and government agencies such as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Department of Education, said Tim Charlet, To Become A Teacher editor.

ToBecomeATeacher.org has analyzed total expense, student to faculty ratios, graduation rates, potential earnings, return on investment and other critical categories, Charlet explained. A total of 41 Texas schools offering bachelor’s degrees in education and 67 offering master’s programs were ranked separately, he said.

"Every school ToBecomeATeacher.org listed in our State of Texas review tool has committed themselves to the pursuit of excellence in the field of Education," Charlet said, "Our review algorithm discovered that among the all schools we reviewed, there are few distinct schools that have surpassed others. These schools were among the top ranked schools in several categories including return on investment, graduation rate and the total expense score. We hope students and their families can utilize this data so they can make an informed decision as to which school is best suited for their individual needs and career aspirations."

TAMIU’s College of Education offers eight distinct bachelor’s degree programs and eight master’s programs. In addition, professional certificates are offered for educational positions, including Educational Diagnostics, Principal, Reading Specialist, School Counselor and Superintendent. A Master Reading Teacher Certificate program is also available.

“I am very proud of the faculty and staff for this accomplishment,” said College of Education Dean Dr. Catheryn Weitman, “They have worked hard to improve the quality of our future educators. This is a testimony to their determination to cultivate educators that are well prepared and successful in the field.

“Our five-year retention rate for first year teachers is also the highest since 2013 of 56 universities, according to data generated from the Center for Research, Evaluation, and Advancement of Teacher Education (CREATE),” she said.

TAMIU’s College of Education, Educator Preparation program is accredited by the State Board of Educator Certification. Its mission is to prepare highly effective culturally competent educational and clinical professionals who are equipped to assume leadership roles in a global society.

Most recently, the College of Education celebrated the expansion of a highly successful TAMIU Literacy Enrichment Center (LEC) program for elementary school students that strengthens reading and writing skills thanks to a generous grant totaling $300,000 from the Trustees of the Lamar Bruni Vergara Trust.

The College also partners with HEB Stores, the City of Laredo Public Library and partner elementary schools to deliver the TAMIU Read-3 Family Literacy Program to young readers. The Program encourages parents to read at least three times a week to and with their little ones. Through workshops that span a six-week period, children are exposed to literacy instruction and acquire basic literary skills before they begin or continue in school. The program, which began with seven students, has now grown to over 70 children and their families participating.
