The Laredo Philharmonic – Laredo’s only nationally recognized professional musical organization – is launching a campaign to build support for its mission of providing world-class concerts with “Giving Tuesday – Supporting Music of Peace, Joy and Love.”

In keeping with the season, “Giving Tuesday” is a concept that focuses on giving back to one’s community. It follows Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and the so-called Cyber Monday.  Gifts of any amount are most welcome and are tax deductible as allowed by law since the Laredo Phil is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization.

In launching the “Giving Tuesday – Supporting Music of  ”Peace, Love, and Joy” campaign, Douglas Ferrier, LPO Board President, stressed the importance of community support for the Philharmonic’s mission.

“We are all familiar with the phrase ‘of the people, by the people, and for the people’. Though these words were spoken about our government, it applies just as much to the arts in our community,” said Ferrier.

This season, the Laredo Phil is presenting four subscription concerts based on a theme of “Music of Peace, Joy and Love.”

In remarks to the audience at the opening October concert, conductor Brendan Townsend, Texas A&M International University assistant professor, shared that this theme came about as “a musicians’ response to the terrible unrest, violence and social instability that was manifested by the terrible atrocities in Orlando, Dallas and other cities.”

The Laredo Philharmonic was founded in 1980 by a group of local community leaders who recognized the importance of a vibrant musical organization in building the future of the Gateway City. Over the past 37 years, it has been supported by grants from leading philanthropists, foundations, corporate support and community giving.

The LPO’s mission is to engage, enrich, educate and entertain the community through music. Many of the musicians of this professional, world-class orchestra are local music educators. The LPO also provides professional opportunities for local music students from both TAMIU and LCC.

The Laredo Philharmonic has been recognized twice by the League of American Orchestras for its commitment to innovative programming, and especially for promoting music by living American composers.

“Winning an ASCAP Award is like winning an “Oscar” in the orchestral world,” said Townsend, “To win that award twice is almost unheard of, and bringing such recognition to Laredo is a mark of the importance of the LPO on a national level.”
