TAMIU Graduate Nurses Score 100% Passing Rate on Board Exams

Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) College of Nursing and Health Science, Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing Class of 2016 Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN-FNP) master’s graduates can claim another special place in the School’s history:  a 100% passing rate on Board Exams from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB).

TAMIU College of Nursing and Health Sciences Dean, Dr. Glenda Walker, said the feat is as impressive as it is historic.  This is the second year in a row that FNP students have performed  at 100% passing rate.

“All four candidates passed on their first attempt,” Dr. Walker noted, “We applaud these FNP graduates and our faculty are thrilled to have partnered with our students as they complete this historic journey.  These graduates are academically and clinically prepared to taken on the role of family nurse practitioners and provide safe care to the public.”

The TAMIU graduates securing the 100% pass rate are Crystal Botello, Jesse Coe, Juan Lira, and Michael Victor Ramos. 

Interim MSN director and FNP Nurse faculty member Dr. Marivic Torregosa said a number of factors contribute to the students’ success.

“We attribute our success to the motivation and persistence of our students to achieve academic excellence, and the high academic standards set by faculty in the FNP program. Because our class sizes are small, we have close faculty-student face-to-face interactions that may be limited in large online FNP programs.

“Our students received great support and mentorship from preceptors from our local community who provide great hands-on clinical experiences and clinical pearls regarding the family nursing practice role. To ensure this level of success, we will continue to set the same rigorous academic standards in the program, and offer the FNP program in the face to face format, as this has shown great success for our TAMIU students,” Dr. Torregosa said.

The Canseco School of Nursing offers a Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner program (MSN-FNP) and a Master of Science in Nursing Administration (MSN-NADM) focused on the critical role of Nursing in Health Care Management.

TAMIU’s graduate programs are fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. The School also offers a three-year part-time option for those students who must work full-time while attending school.  Graduates must pass their national Certification Board exam.

Nurses with graduate degrees as a Family Nurse Practitioner are able to assess, diagnose, and manage clients across the lifespan, in collaboration with other health care professionals.  Those with the MSN-NADM are focused on the critical role of Nursing in Health Care Management.

“The future of health care will focus on disease prevention, and chronic disease management.  Our advanced practice graduate nurses will have the knowledge and skills to advance the profession and improve access to health care for the citizens of Laredo,” Dr. Walker concluded.

TAMIU undergraduate programs in Nursing include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, considered the nursing profession’s educational minimum, and an RN to BSN Online Transition program, which enables working RN nurses to complete their BSN completely online.
