The documentary affirms the importance of community.

KLRN, the Public Television Station for South Central Texas, is proud to acknowledge their Lone Star Chapter Regional Emmy Nomination. The nomination was in the “Documentary-Topical” category for the Rhapsody on the Rio Grande film produced earlier this year.

This production was in partnership with Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) in Laredo, with generous funding from the City of Laredo.

TAMIU President, Dr. Pablo Arenaz said, “We are deeply gratified by this nomination.  It truly is an affirmation of the importance of community and the multicultural roots that bind us all together.  The universality brought to the screen was just as inspirational as the alliance of artists, musicians and storytellers that joined with us, the City of Laredo and KLRN to make this a historic reality,” Dr. Arenaz said.

Arthur Emerson, KLRN President and CEO said, “This film was truly a community effort as it involved many people and an extraordinary amount of planning. This production involved 55 microphones and 17 cameras, without a rehearsal. The KLRN production team went above and beyond to ensure that it was flawless and this nomination makes us proud of what we have created. This documentary covers the music, history and culture of the Rio Grande and it thrills us all to be able to share this story with our viewers, locally and nationally throughout the PBS system.”

Winners will be announced Saturday, November 11 in San Antonio.

 ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY

Rhapsody on the Rio Grande: A Confluence of Culture explores the impact of the river’s ability to bring together diverse peoples, using music to explore themes of culture and history.  The process of bringing the story to life took one year to create.  In addition to interviews with Laredo natives and historical experts, the program took inspiration from an original music composition, “Rapsodia” written by TAMIU faculty member Dr. Colin Campbell. Campbell’s haunting composition shows that music can unite and cross barriers, even at times when language fails to convey. It was performed in concert by the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, accompanied by Campbell on the Sharkey Corrigan Organ and featured the famed Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán de Guadalajara.  KLRN produced the concert presentation at TAMIU.
