TAMIU Presents “Consent Week” 2018 Activities Feb. 3-10

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) will present “Consent Week” Feb. 3-10 with activities geared for students, employees, and the community, including the return of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play, “The Vagina Monologues.”

Consent Week, sponsored by the TAMIU Office of Compliance, is part of an ongoing effort to raise awareness among the TAMIU community about Title IX, on and off campus resources, and the importance of reporting incidents of sexual assault, sexual violence, and sex/gender discrimination.

Title IX, a segment of the Education Amendments of 1972, prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex/gender from any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

“The Vagina Monologues,” facilitated by SCAN-SASI and TAMIU student organization Delta Xi Nu, will be presented in English on Friday, Feb. 9 and in Spanish on Saturday, Feb. 10. Both shows start at 7p.m. in the Student Center, room 236. The event is open to the public and tickets will be available at the door for $15 and $10 for students.

Consent Week events are as follow:

Saturday, Feb. 3 – Sunday Feb. 4: “RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) Training for Women, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Senator Judith Zaffirini Student Success Center (ZSC), room 101. This training will be open to the public and will be presented in two parts. Saturday is Part 1 and Sunday is Part 2. Space is limited to 20 and participants must be 18 years or older. Register by Feb. 1 by contacting Sergio.moreno@tamiu.edu at the TAMIU Police Department. Participants must provide their names, phone numbers and emergency contact information. Training involves physical activity. Must bring your own drinks and snacks.

Saturday, Feb. 3: “Set the Expectation” Basketball Game, 1-4 p.m., Kinesiology and Convocation Building (Gym). The event is open to the public.

Monday, Feb. 5: “Tea and Consent” Information Table, 1-3 p.m., Student Center Rotunda. The event is hosted by the Office of Compliance.

Wednesday, Feb. 7: “TLC: Loving Yourself,” 12-4 p.m., ZSC 101. The event is open to students only.

Thursday, Feb. 8: “Green Dot Training for Employees,” 1:30–4:30 p.m., Student Center (STC) 225. This event is open to employees only and seats are limited. Register at sandra@tamiu.edu.

Friday, Feb. 9: “Safe Zone Training for Employees,” 10 a.m.- 12 noon, location TBA. Open to employees only. Seats are limited.

Friday, Feb. 9: “The Vagina Monologues,” 7 pm., STC 236. Presentation in English. Open to the public.

Saturday, Feb. 10: “The Vagina Monologues,” 7 pm., STC 236. Presentation in Spanish.  Open to the public.
