Planning for the future of Laredo’s hometown university is the focus of a new initiative being launched this year by Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).

The University’s “Imagine 2045” Committee will hone in on developing a strategic plan to guide TAMIU’s development for the next 25 years to ensure it meets the academic, intellectual, and cultural needs of the Laredo region, said TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz.

“In 2020, the University will celebrate its 50th year as an institution and its 25th year on its northeast Laredo campus. Now is the time to begin to plan the University’s future.  We want to explore ways for the University to continue to be an economic engine for the region, and to provide the human capital to fuel that economic growth,” Dr. Arenaz explained.

The Imagine 2045 Committee will be co-chaired by community leader Linda LaMantia and TAMIU vice president for finance and administration Juan J. Castillo.

“I’m especially happy to have Linda LaMantia’s astute partnership for this historic initiative, and the University expertise of Juan Castillo,” he said.

Arenaz said the Committee will be community-based and structured into five sub-committees co-chaired by University and community representatives. The Committee co-chairs and sub-committee co-chairs will comprise an Executive Committee.

“Our five sub-committees will look at educational opportunities in Laredo and beyond, leadership, economic development, community and international engagement, and perception.  The sub-committees will include community members, University alumni and University community members. All will meet monthly,” he explained.
