Students Elect 2018 Mr. & Ms. TAMIU

Culminating Spirit Week 2018, Texas A&M International University students crowned their 2018 Mr. and Ms. TAMIU in ceremonies Saturday at the Dustdevil Men’s Basketball game.

Donato Benítez and Tabata Rodríguez were selected by online vote of their fellow students. Benítez is a senior Criminal Justice major from nearby Roma and Rodríguez a junior Political Science and Spanish major from Nuevo Laredo.

Benítez is a senior majoring in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology from Roma, TX. He is currently employed with the Office of Recruitment and School Relations and an active member of Omega Delta Phi, Student Tour Ambassadors and Recruitment Specialists, and Student Officials Association. He has made a promise to his father that he would be the first in his family to graduate from college and, after completing his undergraduate degree, plans to become an FBI agent and help as many people as he can.

"Mr. TAMIU should seek to inspire current and future Dustdevils always,” Benítez noted.

Rodríguez is a junior majoring in Political Science and Spanish from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, México. She is the current president of the Model United Nations Society of South Texas and an International Student Mentor. Rodríguez is also part of the University Honors Program and a former member of the Freshman Leadership Organization and Sophomore Leaders Involved in Change. Upon graduation, she would like to work as an ambassador for the United Nations to help change the world.

"So many women are depicted as followers, but I want to demonstrate that we are also endowed with the potential of being leaders while following our dreams," Rodríguez said.

The honorary positions are charged with representing TAMIU at events and highlighting the University’s mission, outreach and vision.

Additional Mr. TAMIU candidates included Ernest Rangel, a junior Criminal Justice and Political Science major; Alfredo Vela, an Engineering junior, and Cesar Villarreal, a Systems Engineering senior.

Ms. TAMIU candidates also included Esmeralda Arambula, senior Psychology major; Amy Cortina, senior Communication & Spanish major, Priscilla Rangel, junior Communication major, and Valeria Valdez, junior Nursing major.
