TAMIU is making a splash in national rankings.

Of 126 schools listed, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has been ranked 70 among Best Regional Universities West in the print edition of the 2018 U.S. News and World Report’s Best Colleges ranking.

TAMIU was the second highest-ranked Texas public university, with the University of Houston-Clear Lake earning the rank of 63.

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz said rankings can be a pivotal element in any student’s research into university selection.

“We’re very pleased to figure strongly in this and other rankings, as these can be first research steps as for students selecting their higher education destination.  We suggest potential students augment these efforts by visiting TAMIU or other campuses, where they can meet with faculty and students, and find out what support systems are in place as they begin their journey on campus,” Dr. Arenaz said.

TAMIU was also ranked in U.S. News and World Report’s Top 20 Public Schools. A&M System sister campus West Texas A&M University ranked 30, University of Texas-Permian Basin 35 and University of North Texas 38. TAMIU was ranked 20.  In the 2016 Public Schools ranking, TAMIU was ranked 24.

The U.S. News and World Report notes that public schools like TAMIU offer discounted tuition to state residents and provide experiences ranging from the liberal arts to research capabilities. The ranking notes TAMIU’s student faculty ratio, 20:1; 60% female student population, and campus safety, among other indicators.

The U.S. News ranking system is based on several key measures of quality, including graduation and retention rates, assessment of excellence, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance and alumni giving.

Dr. Arenaz noted that TAMIU revised its admission standards in 2011, resulting in a robust student profile, and its high retention rate boosted its performance.

“We have truly amazing, committed students. They are led by a gifted faculty. Together, they are on a journey focused on student accomplishment and excellence,” Dr. Arenaz concluded.

In its 2017 College Guide, Washington Monthly Magazine ranked TAMIU fourth in its Top Ten, rising from eighth last year. TAMIU also rocketed up 27 places in the College Guide’s National Master’s Universities listing to 68 of 632 institutions ranked.  Last year, TAMIU ranked 95.

TAMIU will host its annual “Discover TAMIU event,” a day-long Open House offering students of all ages, their families, and community members the opportunity to experience the University on Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
