A family-friendly opportunity to connect with Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) happens Saturday, April 7 from 11- 4 p.m. as TAMIU presents  “Discover TAMIU,”  a campus-wide annual open house featuring over 90 fun activities for all ages.

Now celebrating its fourth year of offering, Discover TAMIU provides students of all ages, their families, and community members the opportunity to experience The International U. It’s a celebration focused on the 300-acre campus, its programs and faculty, and its unifying drive for excellence, organizers say.

TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz said Discover TAMIU is about connection.

“ ‘Discover TAMIU’ is all  about engaging our community with the University and seeing how we brighten futures, lift hearts and open minds,” he said, “Whether you share this day with your child or teen, or carve out a day for yourself and friends, at Discover TAMIU, we want to focus on how education makes possibilities real for all. It’s a great way to join with family and friends and share a journey of discovery,” Dr. Arenaz said.

Gina González, associate vice president of Student Success, and one of the event’s key organizers, said experiences are arranged along five pathways.

“One of the pathways, Artistic Avenue, allows participants to express themselves through creative art, dance and music. Scientific Journey, opens the world of science, shapes and surprises. Through Business Boulevard, students can see how business plays a huge role in their world. Another pathway, International U, presents culture, education, humanities and social sciences with a global twist. Spirited Speedway invites students to participate in our Dustdevil Family traditions,” González explained.

Signature activities include basketball, putt-putt golf, soccer, obstacle courses, planetarium shows, a baseball game, dance and mariachi performances by students and guest artists, a children’s activity that’s part of the month-long “Cervantes & Shakespeare Go Pop” Festival; world and TAMIU trivia, and a Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (TAME) interactive trailer showcasing what a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education encompasses, she noted.

“There’s a lot going on, so we have a dedicated website with updated event information and program available online at  www.tamiu.edu/discovertamiu/,” González said.

TAMIU Food Services, including the Food Court, Dusty’s Diner and Starbucks will be open throughout Discover TAMIU.

“We are excited to host this event and welcome Laredo and surrounding communities to discover ‘The International U,’” she said, “It really features something for everyone. Children will be able to participate in hands-on activities and performances, while teens will learn what it takes to become a true Dustdevil.”

“College readiness professionals will provide useful information to prepare visitors to be college-savvy. Community members will have a chance to meet our gifted faculty as well as our students, and tomorrow’s leaders,” González concluded.

The event is also being shared on the University’s dedicated social media channels on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and YouTube.
