April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Equal Opportunity and Diversity Office is sponsoring various campus activities as part of the national movement to end sexual assault on college campuses called ‘It’s On Us.’

“We welcome everyone to join TAMIU in the movement to end sexual assault by participating in this month’s events and taking the pledge to end sexual assault at ItsOnUs.org,” said Lauren Jones, director of Compliance.

Events are free and open to the public.

“This is TAMIU’s fourth year participating in the movement with a week dedicated to addressing the issue of sexual assault,” Jones said, “The events and activities educate our students and employees about reporting responsibilities and available resources and bring awareness and encourage communication about a subject that has long been a closeted issue.

The League of Empowered Women, a student organization, will also present ‘Put a Nail In It’ Monday, April 16, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., in the Student Center Rotunda. The event will feature a manicure station where participants can have a nail painted in the color teal to support sexual assault awareness.

Finally, ‘Take Back the Night,’ is planned for Thursday, April 19, from 5-8 p.m. at the Student Center Patio. The event will provide a forum for victims of sexual assault to tell their stories and will feature other activities.

Jones said that other activities specifically designed for staff have also been presented.

”In addition, the University community will participate in Teal Thursdays, where participants wear the color teal every Thursday in April to show support to end sexual assault, Jones said.
